The Schoodic Point section of Acadia National Park in the small fishing village of Winter Harbor has one of the most beautiful rocky stretches of coastline in the whole state or for that matter the country. The waves breaking against the rocks can be truly spectacular especially if there has been a storm at sea. The park has a picnic area overlooking the whole bay with a long warf from which people fish for mackeral, stripers and bluefish when they run. There are plenty of things to see and do. Oh yeh, I almost forgot to mention you can buy lobstahs real cheap and I mean dirt cheap at the local fishermans co-op.

Welcome to Winter Harbor in Downeast Maine. The way life should be.

Explore and enjoy Schoodic Peninsula with its many beauties and relaxed pace. Walk to everything, there are 4 restaurants, an old fashioned 5&10, grocery store, craft, art & antique shops and and allot more. There's also a nine hole golf course on Grindstone neck that overlooks our harbor on one side and Frenchmans bay on the other.

If you enjoy the ocean take a sailboat cruise, lobster boat trip, kayak the bay and meander through the coves with thier overlooking cliffs,. Ride out and see the seals basking on the rocks on the other side of Turtle Island or the osprey nesting near the Halibut Hole. Picnic on the rocks out at Grindstone.

About a mile away is the entrance to the Schoodic Point section of Acadia National Park. Bike the park or hike its trails.

The first thing you will come to after you enter the park is Fraziers Point public picnic area overlooking the entire harbor and the town. There is a pier with a float attached that many fish for mackeral, bluefish and stripers when they run. From here you'll get a spectacular views of the mountains, Mark Island Lighthouse and you can watch the harbor porpoises, gulls, osprey, terns and of course the lobstermen pulling in the days catch.

If you are lucky you might see a whale. The vistas are nothing less than magnificent and many have spent the entire vacations right there. The gray and pink granite coastline is a sight you won't soon forget. Next, hike or drive to the top of Schoodic Mountain to see some breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. When you get out to the point relax or picnic and gaze straight out into the Atlantic Ocean. It can be really spectacular if there has been a storm at sea. People will come from all around to watch the waves break over the rocks. Caution though, the sea can be rough enough to throw boulders right up into the road! So you certainly wouldn't want to get to close the edge on days like those.

Freshwater swimming and canoeing at Jones, Little Tunk or Molasses Ponds. Or enjoy fishing for landlocked salmon, brook trout, lake trout and bass.

If you are a leaf peeper and plan on visiting to view New Englands fall foliage in all it's colors. The leaves generally reach their peak in October and can be quite spectacular.

If you just can't get relaxed and need a little more excitement you can always take the ferry to Bar Harbor. Along the way you will see seals, porpoises, ospreys and round many small islands. If you go early in the morning you might see deer coming out to the rocks to lick the salt. You might also see a deer or moose swimming between land and the islands. Moose regularly swim clear across the bay.

There are also bald eagles, sea turtles, whales and one of the most unusual looking fish you have probably ever seen, a sunfish. They seem to average around 400-600 pounds Downeast but can get as large as 3000 pounds. They are round in shape and have a fin that gives the first impression of a shark in the water. You can get right up and pet them if you like. Most people think they are dead or sick when first seen and when I first glimpsed one I thought it was the front half of a great white shark. My second thought was, what could eat that and I think I want to go home now! Seriously though they are very friendly, curious and primarily eat jellyfish. And finally let's not forget, some of the cottages, cabins and camps out there on the islands can really take you back to a different era.
