Drawing and Painting Workshops and Lessons Summer 2004 with Stephen Burt

Drawing with Pen and Ink. Drawing with pen and ink is an essential tool for the artist concerned with draftsmanship. The flexible and direct quality of drawing in ink with the quill pen is far more expressive than technical pens and markers that many artists rely on. The fact that ink cannot be erased requires a decisive envisioning of the work in progress and with practice will add a distinctive voice to your artistic repertoire. To the artist taking up this medium however it can be intimidating without a proper introduction to materials and process. This workshop will give you the information and basic skills you need to give voice to your inspiration. Saturday, May 15, 2004 10:00 am to 3:00pm
and Saturday, June 19 10:00am to 3:00pm

Master Class in Portraiture.
The drawn portrait from life or the imagination is an essential part of an artists training. Yet many of the contemporary approaches to this subject relay on photography or "observation" to solve difficult problems of anatomy and form. This workshop will give both the beginner and advanced student the tools of the trade from a Renaissance perspective. Using proportional models and techniques from the old masters this course will advance your understanding of the portrait and open your eyes to the great possibilities in this "traditional" form. We will use pencil and charcoal in this one-day workshop after which you will never see the portrait in the same way again
