Job Description

    There are many different types of teachers.  For each level of education, the teachers job description is different.  For example, the type of work a first grade teacher has to deal with is not the same thing as a college professor might go through.


    Teachers that teach grades K-6 are known as Elementary Teachers.  They teach the younger students academic, social, and physical skills.  These teachers include interactive discussions and "hands-on" activities to help inhance the learning experience.  They use games, music, art, work, films, computers, and other teaching techniques to teach basic skills.  Being a elementary teacher, you have to assign lessons, prepare and give tests, listen to oral presentations, and maintain classroom discipline.  You have to observe and evaluate a student's performance and potential.  You may use assessment methods to measure student achievement, such as examining a portfolioof work and writing.  You have to grade papers, prepare report cards, and supervise extracurricular activities.  You must meet with parents and school staff to discuss a student's academic progress.  You must also participate in education conferences and workshops.  Most elementary teachers in America earn between $26,000 to $52,000.


    You can also become a secondary teacher.  Secondary teachers tend to work in middle, junior high, and high schools.  You must instruct students in specific subjects such as English, Math, Social Studies, or Science.  Some teach courses to prepare students for specific jobs.  You must develop teaching plans, assign lessons, prepare and give tests, listen to oral presentations, and maintain classroom discipline.  Some secondary teachers use teaching aids such as computers, video tapes, video disks, cameras, telecommuncations systems, tape recorders, films, and other equipment to conduct class.  Some secondary teachers supervise study halls, homerooms, and extracurricular activities.  You also have to participate in education conferences and workshops.  Most secondary teachers in America earn between $26,000 to $52,000.


    Being a college or university faculty member is an extremely prestigious job.  College professors teach and advise college students and perform a significant part of our Nation's research.  The prepare and give lectures, exercises, and laboratory experiments, and grade exams and papers.  They advise and work with students individually or in groups.  They may use computers including the Internet, electronic mail, and CD-ROMS; videotapes; and other teaching aids.  They study and meet with colleagues to keep up with developments in their field.  The consuly with government, business, nonprofit, and community organizations.
