Job Shadowing...

What is it?

A job shadow is when you "follow" around someone of your career intrest. In this case, it may be a dermatologist. You see and learn what they actually do in that day, but you don't get paid for it. You are there to observe and maybe participate in what the doctor is doing--it all depends in what the doctor does for a living. If you're job shadowing a surgeon, you might not be able to watch the actual surgery.

How Do I Get One?

There are lots of people out there who are willing to take the time to let you get a taste of what it may feel like to be them. Especially students like you who show an interest in the topic. Here are some things you may have to do:

  1. 1. Call a local doctor (dermatologist) in your area. If you have a particular doctor in mind, try giving him or her a call.
  2. 2. Tell the person what you are doing and what you want to do. (job shadow)
  3. 3. Set up an appointment. Doctors have busy schedules and they may have days where they  can't let you job shadow, due to privacy of the patients.
  4. 4. If someone is not willing to do it, try calling someone else. Don't be disappointed if the doctor won't let you job shadow. You can always interview the doctor or talk to him or her to get a basic idea.
  5. 5. If you have an appointment... congratulations! Just DON'T forget to show up!!!
Good luck! Just remember to be respectful and that not every day may be like the day you visited. Also, ask questions, you may be suprised at some of the answers!
