A Trail of Bread Crumbs

Part 1
It was after 8 and the blue sedan had hit every red light since it had left the 101st precinct. The driver was more then an hour late for dinner at her lover's apartment. She was furious at herself for forgetting the time but she had been doing that a lot in the past week. She tried to stop the memory of what had happened a week ago but nothing could stop it. Miss Donovan 'The Bitch' coming to the precinct and telling her that Kermit and her would no longer be needed to take care of Abby. In two weeks the baby would be given to her new parents and it would be best for Baby Doe to get used to not seeing them. She would soon forget them and accept the Carters have her new parents. She had tried to adopt the baby girl she had found in the alley Christmas Eve but Miss Donovan would have none of it. An unmarried police officer with an ex-killer as a lover, adopt this baby or any baby, never was her answer. Ex-killer, she knew what Miss Donovan really though about Kermit. Every time Miss Donovan had seen Kermit she couldn't take her eyes off him and it wasn't fear that was in them.
The light had turned green but Karen had been unaware of it and she also was unaware of the car on her left full of thugs. But their leader was very aware of her and had big plans for Captain Karen Simms of the 101st Precinct.
The car shot head of her and blocked her path. Then all four of the gang members jumped out and surrounded her car. Karen started to slam her car into reverse then she heard two shots and her car listed to one side as the tires where blown out. Then a third shot hit the rocker panel beneath her door. She knew the next would kill her if she tried to move the car again. The one thing that she had done right was locking her car's doors but that wouldn't hold them for long. Karen reached for her car phone to call for help when the window beside her broke from the blow of a rifle mutt. Luckily her face was turned away when the window was smashed but she could feel the glass in her hair and on her clothes. The leader grabbed the phone from her hand and tore it out of the dashboard then unlocked her door. Once the door was open he reached in and grabbed her by the hair to control her. Now that she was under his control he reached down and unbuckled her seat belt then dragged her out of the car.
"Well if it isn't Captain Simms." He sneered as he still held her by the hair. Then he grabbed her gun out of its holster. "Let's see how you like being frisked?"
Using her hair as leverage he forced her to turn around and face her car. She had not said a word since the attack had started. They would not make her beg no matter what. Once she was facing the car she assumed the position no use putting up a fight yet. She would wait for the right moment. Karen bit her lip and kept her eyes straight ahead as all four of them took turns at frisking her, making sure they did a good job of it. Why didn't she leave on time she would be safe in Kermit's apartment with his hands on her not theirs? No time for that kind of thinking she had to keep her wits if she was ever going to see Kermit again. When they were done frisking her the leader turned her around again to face him. Several cars had gone by but her attackers had had the foresight to but her police light on the top of their car. No one would ever give them a second look. No matter how wrong this looked. Most people were too busy to get involved.
"Duke we'd better be careful," said a thin nervous youth that kept looking around for trouble. " You know who her boyfriend is. I've heard he was a CIA hit man before becoming a cop."
"Wart don't believe all the rumors. I've seen the guy. He's a computer nerd that tells stories. I bet he can't even use a gun let alone kill anyone." Rebuked his boss.
"You really believe that Duke?" said Karen seeing an opening. She decided to use a little exaggeration to make them nervous. "You're wrong. He was a CIA assassin and he can still use a gun better then anyone I've ever seen."
"Shut up, bitch!" yelled Duke as he backhanded her across the face. That split her lip but she ignored the pain and the taste of blood in her month. "We'll see which one of his guns you were talking about when we get you back to our pad. The boys and I will show you how young studs use their guns and then you can tell us who's better, Captain."
Duke grabbed her by the hair again and started to drag her toward the back seat of his car. "Wart, take the Captain's car and get rid of it and if you do it fast enough she might still have enough energy left for you."
That was the last order that Duke gave before the bullet hit his shoulder. That released Karen who hit the ground to get out of Kermit's way. Before the others had time to react three more shots rang out. And the others joined their leader on the ground, wounded like him. Karen had seen Kermit's green corvair go by as Duke was dragging her to his car. Thank God he had recognized her. She didn't want to think about what would have happen if he hadn't.
"Karen!" Kermit cried once her attackers were on the ground. Then ran to her side. She got to her feet without his help. This was no time for the helpless female routine. She was Captain Karen Simms and no matter what had almost happened to her she was going to act like that.
"Have you called for back up?" she asked without emotions.
"Yes. They on their way." he said trying to control his need to protect and comfort her. The way she was acting told him that would have to wait for later. "Captain are you all right?"
"Outside of a splitting headache and a spit lip I'm fine, Detective." she informed him. The one thing she wanted more than anything was to be in his arms at this moment but she would not show that weakness to her attackers. In her heart she knew that his arms would be there when this was over and he would stay near her until then.
By the time they had cuffed and confiscated all the gangs' weapons back up had arrived. Strenlich and Kelly were first on the scene. They were just leaving the precinct when Kermit's call had come in. Strenlich took over the situation after he got the story from his Captain and Kermit. The gang members were stabilized and taken to the hostipal. None were in serious conduction. Caine had definitely rubbed off on Kermit. The old Kermit would have blown all four of them away for attacking any woman let alone his woman without a second thought.
"Chief I'm taking the Captain to the hostipal." Said Kermit while Karen was talking to Kelly.
"Sure. We got everything under control here. Get her out of here and some place that she considers safe. Like her place not yours." said the Chief as he reminded Kermit of the fact she had been kidnapped out of his apartment once.
Kermit just smiled at him and walked over to their Captain to escort her to the emergency room to get checked out. She hadn't let the paramedics check her over and he was worried that she might be in more pain then she would admit. But he didn't expect the fight he was about to get.
"No, Kermit I'm not going to the hospital! All I need is a couple of aspirins and a good night's sleep." she rebuked him. She couldn't go to that hostipal and not see Abby. She couldn't face that on top of everything else. "If you want to take me home, fine, but not hostipal."
"At least let me take you to The Ancient." he implored her.
"All right! Just to make you happy. Any way he probably has something better than aspirin." she agreed.

Part 2
"We will let her rest while the herb takes effect." Stated The Ancient as he closed the door behind him. Kermit had been waiting in the main room of The Ancient's apartment while he took care of Karen in one of the bedrooms. He had spent the time walking the floor forcing himself not to think of what might have happened if he hadn't gotten there in time. His mercenary instinct was to find her when she was so late and the precinct had said she wasn't there. The gods had to have been watching over them tonight."
"You will sit down now and listen to me." ordered the older man while pointing to a chair next to his workbench. Without comment Kermit took the seat that was indicated. The Ancient had never spoken to him in such a manner before. He felt the same way he had when his father would lecture him about something he had done wrong as a boy.
"Do you have any idea of what I would give for the chance you have?" He asked standing in front of Kermit. His anger was barely under control and it showed it his stance and his eyes. "I lost the woman I loved to death. I will get no second chance with her in this life but you have been given a second chance with the woman you have loved for the last twenty years. Why are you not embracing it? If it had been me I would have made her my wife the day I found her again."
"If my conscience was as clear as yours I would have too!" Answered Kermit torn between the guilt for making her wait for him and his fear that his past would some how touch her. "When she came back into my life I was dead inside. I just wanted to hide from everything and everybody and I was doing a damn good job of it. If I had tried to be anything more to her than a friend is and her hidden protector I would have destroyed her and what little I had of myself. I knew I was running the risk of losing her forever but that was the only option I had."
"I understand that my friend. But what is holding you back now? Losing that baby is destroying her now, not you. Though you are not helping. She half believes she is losing you as well, to another woman." The Ancient said with his anger cooling he let his compassion for his friend's pain replace it. He had placed his hand on the younger man's shoulder as a father would to comfort a son.
"What woman? There's no other woman!"
"There is Angel."
"Angel is my daughter! But Karen doesn't know that. I've been so overjoyed to have Angel and Jim as truly part of my life for the first time that I didn't realized what Karen might be thinking."
"I too know what it is like to hide the fact you have a child because that is the only way to protect that child. Soon Kermit you will no long have to hide them but for now you must prove that Angel is no threat to Karen. You also must help her though this pain and yourself as well."
"I'm trying but I have no idea what to do next."
"Yes you do! Do what is in your heart. She needs to feel and see your love for her and you need to share it with her. Stop worrying about your past. There is nothing you can do to change it. If it comes back to haunt you then deal with it then. You must start living for the present and planing for the future or you might as well crawl back into that office of yours at the 101st."
"Do what is in my heart. It wants me to go into that room and ask her to marry me tomorrow."
"I think you could be a little more romantic about it. The best medicine for her is to be spoiled and pampered by you and doing that would be the best medicine for you."
Kermit just looked at him trying to find a reason not to do what his friend had suggested. He could find only two. His own fear and self-doubt and it were time to get past that. "Your right my friend. Tomorrow I'm going to sweep Captain Karen Simms off her feet." said Kermit making a decision about his future and hopefully hers as well. "Can I take her home now."
"Yes. Her headache should be gone but make sure she continues to rest when she gets home. I have given her some more of the herb in case she is still in pain in the morning, but she will be fine. Kermit if you need an old man's help with sweeping her off feet I would be honored."
"I most likely will." he said knowing that this man was the rare individual who knew that you could found solace for your own pain in helping others with theirs.

Part 3
It had been a quiet day at the 101st if you can call any day quiet. The usual yelling between cops and prisoners but no major disasters thank goodness. Kermit had been in and out of the precinct all day, which was not his usual routine. He said he was following up some leads he had on a case but the way he kept smiling made her wonder if there was something more to his comings and goings than law enforcement. He had also kept popping into her office using some rather weak excuses. She knew he was keeping an eye on her. The last time he dropped in was to make sure she'd remember to leave on time. His last statement puzzled her. Why did he want her to make all her usual Friday stops? Sergeant Borercik delivered the answers to her questions, or at least one of the answers.
"Captain." He said as he stood at her open office door. She could see a small package in his hand.
"Yes, Sergeant? Come in." She replied.
"Captain, this was just delivered for you." the uniformed officer said as he handed her the package he was carrying.
"With the way my luck has been running maybe I should call the bomb squad." was her half-joking, half-serious reply.
"I know who it's from. I promise you it's no bomb." he reassured her.
"Who is it from?" She asked beginning to get intrigued.
"You're going to have to open it to find out. I promised I wouldn't tell. If you don't need me Captain I think I'd better get back to the desk."
"Of course and thank you." she said as he turned and left.
Karen watched him shut her door as he left the office. He was wearing a grin that said that something was going on and he was part of it. She just looked down at the small rectangular cardboard box on her desk. There was nothing on the outside that gave a clue to it contents or it's sender. Her guess was that the sender was Kermit. When the top was removed it revealed a small gift-wrapped package inside. The wrapping paper's green color confirmed her guess of the sender. Once the green paper was removed she saw the contents for the first time, a plastic container with a white orchid wrist corsage in it. One like she wore to her prom. She gently picked up the flower so that she could admire it, then she saw the envelope.
Inside the envelope was a message that read:
To My Lady,
I wish I could have been the boy who took you to the prom. I don't have a prom to take you to but I think you will like what I will be taking you to tomorrow night. What that is will be revealed later. Now before you leave you might want to check your locker. There is a friend waiting for you there.
"K"
PS Don't forget I'm waiting for you at your pad.
At Nightfall
I need so much the quiet of your love
What was Kermit up to? All he had said about tonight was that he would be cooking her dinner at her place and most likely is there when she got home. He hadn't mentioned any thing about taking her out tomorrow night. And who was the friend in her locker?

Part 4
The ladies locker room was nearly deserted when Karen entered. Mary Margaret was getting something out of her locker while talking to Kelly and Jody.
A few others were on their way out to start work on the night shift. She walked over to the locker with her name on it wondering how Kermit had gotten in here and how did he know her combination. He had keys to her apartment and car but she had never given him the combination to her locker. Well Kermit picking computer lock isn't your only lock picking skill I see. Once she opened the locker she spotted the gift sitting on the shelf. It was wrapped in the same green paper as the other but this time there was a matching green ribbon. She took down the present and started to unwrap it when she became aware that she was no longer alone.
"Don't let us bother you we're dying to know what's in it." stated Mary Margaret as she and her companions joined their Captain at her locker.
"How did you know it was here?" asked Karen as she stopped unwrapping the gift with the realization that they were watching her.
"We helped Kermit sneak in here." Was Kelly's answer?
"And we've still dying to know what he gave you." continued Jody. "We also want to know what was in the first package that Broderick delivered."
"Does everyone know about what Kermit is up to but me? She asked upset with herself that this had been going on without her being aware of it.
"Captain you were too busy taking care of what happened last night to catch Kermit sneaking around." Mary Margaret said. "We don't know just what Kermit is doing. All we have are some clues."
"Just what clues do you have?" asked Karen in the same tone she would use in interrogating them about a suspect.
"Blake's been watching him all day." Stated Jody. "He over heard Kermit on the phone with someone when he was bringing Kermit a report. Kermit was using his charm on someone to get tickets to something. Blake said that Kermit acted
Like he wanted those tickets and no one was going to stop him from getting them."
"Blake's spies spotted Kermit at Peter's, at Richmond's jewelry shop, and The Ancient's where he when in with one package and left with other " said Kelly as if she was giving a report on the activities of a suspect. "Blake himself spotted Kermit giving the box to Broderick and then we all saw him deliver it to you."
"If everyone's been following Kermit who's been doing the police work? The guys in lockup." Their captain asked.
"Captain, no ones been following him. There isn't anyone in the precinct that could follow him." stated Jody. "Everyone kept an eye out for him and if they saw him they told Blake next time they saw Blake. "
"We were all trying to beat Kermit at his own game. We thought we could if the whole precinct worked together." added Mary Margaret.
"We were wrong. He caught us." continued Kelly. "Pay back was we had to help him."
"Now that we've given you all our preterit information would you please tell us what's in the packages?' Inquired Mary Margaret.
"Yes." she agreed as she once again started to unwrap the gift. "The first one was a white orchid wrist corsage." When she placed the unwrapped box on the bench in front of the lockers and lifted off the top. Inside was a stuffed toy. To be precise a stuffed green frog completes with green shades and tie. All four women broke into laughter. Karen was laughing so hard that she had to lean against the lockers for support. She had needed this! She couldn't remember the last time that something had made her laugh and it felt good to know she still remembered how. Kelly removed the frog from its box to take a closer look and an envelope fell out. Jody picked it up and handed it to her still laughing Captain.
"Well we've missing happy hour a Delancy's, partners. I think we've better be off and let the Captain read her mail alone." Suggested Jody.
"We'll make sure that the Chief handles everything this weekend but we want a full debriefing Monday." said Kelly as the trio walked out the door leaving her with her gifts and an unopened envelope.
She opened the envelope now that she had her composure back. It read:
To My Lady,
This is a friend from me to you so you understand that even when we are apart, a part of me is always there with you. And I've always carried part of you in my heart since the moment I first meet you.
"K"
P. S. This is a little poem on how to treat frogs.
The Frog
Be kind and tender to the Frog,
No animal will more repay
The few women officers in the locker room with her just stared when they heard there normally stoic Captain burst into laughter. They watched in wonder as she barely made the bench as she sat down laughing so hard that there were tears in her eyes. None of them noticed the dark man watching the scene with a smile on his face. Kermit was pleased with himself the gift had worked. It had made her laugh. As he listened to her laughter he realized how much he had missed it. The Ancient was right. He was helping himself by concentrating on pampering her. This was the first time in weeks that he felt this good about himself and the first time in decades that he felt this confident about his future.

Part 5
Kermit kept to the shadows as he followed the woman he loved to her car. He watch as she placed her two boxes on the roof of the car before she used the key in her hand to unlock the door. She had not noticed the gift that was on her the front seat yet but as soon as the door was opened she did. For a moment she just stood and stared at the dozen red roses tied with a green ribbon. She reached in and picked them up and breathed in their fragrance. He knew that red roses were her favorite and he had often given them to her.
A memory came to her of waking up with the smell of roses surrounding her. At first she didn't know where she was then she remembered. She was in the bridal suite of the best hotel in the city. Gently as possible she turned to face the man who arms was encircling her. Two night before they had almost make it to this place in their relationship but her kidnapping out of his apartment had stopped it. He said that he wasn't going to let bad memories ruin a special evening so he had rented this bridal suite for them for the weekend. And her teasing him about him being romantic seemed to hit home. When they arrived she found both the bedroom and sitting room filled with roses, a bottle of champagne chilling and a private supper waiting.
The sound of a car pulling out of the police parking lot woke her from her dream and she opened the envelope with the roses. It read:
To My Lady,
I remember the day you told me of your love of roses and how roses seemed the perfect symbol of our love. For like the rose it is beautiful but we always had the thorns to remind us of the pain it cost. Even then I knew that what ever I had to pay in pain it was worth it for just the short time I had with you then. Now to have you back in my life as My Lady is more than I had dared to hope for.

The Rose and Thorn
She's loveliest of the festal throng
Though bright her eyes' bewildering gleams,
Young lover, tossed 'twixt hope and fear,
Kermit watched as she smiled while reading the note and the poem it contained. Then he saw her wipe away a tear before carefully placing the roses and then her gifts in the back seat. After she was safely on her way he left the parking lot to add the finishing touches to her apartment before she got there.

Part 6
"Thank you, Captain Simms." said the young female teller that had just handed her, her receipts. "Have a nice day."
"Thank you." Karen replied more out of habit then anything. She was to involve with her own thoughts. She had stopped for a moment to put things in her purse as her mind turned inward. Nothing unusual had happened so far at the bank. Why did Kermit want her to make all her usual stops? Maybe he needed time to get things ready at the apartment. A small voice in the back of her mind kept nagging at her. It kept saying he's guilty about something. He's has been having an affair with Angel and because of last night he's decided that he wanted her. All the gifts are his way of apologizing without her finding out why he's apologizing. No!"
"Karen. Karen!" The bank president John Durham had to say her name twice to get her attention.
"John. Sorry I was in my own little world." she apologized.
"That all right. I have some idea what kind of afternoon you've having." he said with a knowing smile. "Kermit stopped here today and left something for you."
"Let me guess. A gift wrapped in green paper." she summarized.
"Now many have you gotten so far?" he asked has he handed her a tiny flat package wrapped in green paper that he just pulled out of his suit pocket.
"A orchid corsage, a dozen roses, and a stuffed frog dressed in shades and tie." she replied as she unwrapped the package. Inside were an envelope with two theater tickets and the usual note with poem. "This time it's tickets to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat starring Donny Osmond that opens tomorrow. There're 3rd row center, but you already knew that."
"Yes." he agreed with smile. "There are actually four tickets. Megan and I will be joining the two of you there."
"Great! What's going on John? Kermit isn't the romantic type."
"I don't know about that. But I think what happened last night scared the hell out of him and it couldn't have done you much good either. You're wrong about him not being the romantic type. He was the one who played matchmaker to Megan and I."
"I'm fine and you're right about Kermit. But he never has been the type to give a lot of presents."
"I don't know what he's up to but he is enjoying himself whatever it is." said John. "Well I have to be going. I have some one waiting."
"And I have a note to read. Thank-you and see you and Megan tomorrow." she said once he left she turned her attention to the note. It read:
To My Lady,
I can't take my beautiful woman to a prom but I hope that these tickets will be acceptable as a replacement.

The Passionate Shepherd to His Love
Come live with me and be my love,
And we will sit upon the rocks,
And I will make thee beds of roses,
A gown made of the finest wool
A belt of straw and ivy buds,
The shepherds' swains shall dance and sing
After reading the poem Karen smiled and headed for her next stop wondering what would be waiting there.

Part 7
As Karen walked to her car in the bank's parking lot she spotted Blake standing beside it. She stopped for a second to wonder what he was doing there before going over to him.
"Kermit has you delivering something to me?" she asked when she got to him.
"Right, Captain." Her detective said as he pulled out a small rectangular box that he had poking out of his pocket. He handed it to her looking like he wanted to say something but was to nervous to say it.
"The gossip monger's down at the precinct want to know if I got anything since I left the station." She guessed. "A dozen roses and tickets to the opening night of Joseph."
"Captain, you don't think someone's kidnapped Kermit and put a substitute in his place?" Blake asked. "He's not acting himself today."
"That's a possibility that I hadn't thought off." she said through her laughter. "No, but he's up to something and the only way any of us will find out what it is, is for all of us to play this out his way. Let's find out what's in this package, Detective." Then she took off the green wrapping paper and opened the jewelry box within. Inside the box was a note covering what was inside. She removed the note, she would read it later, and saw a green jade heart with a rose craved on it hung on a gold necklace.
"That's what he was getting a Richmond's jewelry shop," said Blake. "It's pretty Captain. I'll be seeing you Monday. Bye."
"Bye Blake." she said again out of habit because her mind was on the necklace she had just received. Blake had understated it. It was beautiful not pretty. Then she closed the box and got in her car to read the note. It read:
To My Love,
This small token is to tell you that you have been my heart's desire since the moment I first saw you. I hope that that feeling is returned.
"K"
PS The poem says what I could never put into words about the years I spent without you.
The Want Of You
The want of you is like no other thing; ith a wreath of rue-
It flashes on me with the waking sun;
It sighs within my with the misting skies;
Mad with demand and aching with despair,
Ivan Leonard Wright
Karen just sits in her car for a time after reading the poem a second time. The pain of all those years without him, not knowing if he was alive or dead came back to her. But it was just a memory now; it had been replaced by the joy of finding him again. Time to go! Two more stops before she could go home and thank him for all his gifts. And she knew just how to thank him! Supper was differently going to be late tonight.

Part 8
"Hello, Captain" greeted Peter Caine as his ex-captain walked up to him after leaving the dry cleaners. He was standing next to his car apparently waiting for her.
"Hi, Peter." she responded. "Don't tell me. He has you in on this, too."
"Oh, yeah." he said doing his Kermit imitation. "How are you doing?"
"I'm fine, and the last thing I want to talk about is last night. I'm having too good a time trying to figure out what my man is up to and guessing at what's come next."
"Well I'm delivering what's next and I had to stop him from scaring a friend of mine to death to get it." he said when he opened his passenger door and carefully pulled out a garment bag with the name Gaston on it.
"Is that what I think it is?" not quite ready to believe that Kermit would go so far as to buy her a dress but that would explain his visit to the new fashion house.
"A Gaston original. You should have seen Kermit. He dragged me over to the new fashion house that Bernie is opening next week. Then proceeded to bully poor Bernie into selling him an evening gown so you would have something new to wear to the opening tomorrow night. Bernie wanted to keep all his designs a secret until the opening but Kermit was determined to get one for you. I got Kermit to back down and Bernie to give in. I think Bernie realized that it would be good for business and staying a live if you wore it to the opening. If the dress doesn't fit you call Bernie tomorrow morning and he promises that he would have it ready before the opening."
"Peter is he all right?"
"Bernie's fine."
"No Kermit!"
"He's fine, too. But is obsessed with spoiling you. He reminds me of Scrooge after he discovered the joy of giving. He started this small but he just kept adding to it. The precinct gang started a pool on where this is going."
"Great! I can't wait to hear what the Commissioner is going to say about this."
"He all ready knows. He's in on the pool," said Peter and with that statement they both started laughing.
"For a man who keeps secrets he's not doing to well on with this one." she stated.
"There was no way he could have and do it the way he wanted too. So he let everyone find out and then got us all to help. Are you going to open this? My arm is breaking." Peter said still holding the garment bag.
She didn't answer him she just unzipped the bag to reveal a dark green strapless evening gown. Then she noticed the envelope tied to the hanger and untied it. To save Peter's arm she zipped the bag back up. She would take a good look at it at home. She looked forward to modeling it for Kermit.
"It's beautiful and your going to be gorgeous in it." Flattered Peter as he helped her get it into her car along with her other clothes from the dry cleaners which had been sitting on the trunk of her car while they talked. "Well we have all been ordered to leave you alone to read the notes. So I guess it's time to head for Delancy's and see how the pool is going. "
"Thank you, Peter." she said as he held her car door for her.
"Karen, your the only woman in his life." He said then shut her door.
She watched him get into his car and drive away before she opened the envelope. It read:
To My Lady,
Usually the first evening gown a woman owns is the one she wears to her prom. I couldn't see you in that dress but I have no doubt you were the most beautiful girl there. I want you to have something new for the opening so I bought you the one I most wanted to see you in. And like that boy I'm going to have the most beautiful woman there on my arm.

When She Comes Home
When she comes home again! A thousand ways
She was beginning to believe that Kermit was trying to make up to her for all the years they had spent apart. Why was he suddenly dwelling on that? When they had started seeing each other again he said that it would be best to start over as though this was a new relationship and not talk about the past. And she had agreed. This poem seems to be saying what he feels about having her back in his life again. Kermit Griffin you are the most complex man I've even known. I think we've got it backward. It's the woman who supposes to lure the man in with her air of mystery not the other way around. No it works both ways.

Part 9
The last stop before home. What had Kermit planned this time and whom had he involved. Those were the thoughts running though her mind as she entered the local grocery store not far from her apartment. She hadn't gotten more that a few steps into the store when the owner came up to her. Karen couldn't help but notice a gold box in his hand with a green ribbon on it.
"Captain Simms how are you this fine day." greeted Mr. Chan with the cheerfulness of man with a private joke.
"I'm fine Mr. Chan and you?" she said returning his greeting.
"I am fine but saddened by the horrible thing that happen to you last night and I am glad that you are now safe." He said showing his concern for one of his long time customers.
"Thank-you for you concern." She said hoping that he would not want any of the details about last night for she wasn't up to talking about it again.
"I have a message for you from Mr. Griffin." he said next. "You will not need to shop for he has done it all ready. Also I was to give you this gift from him."
"Thank-you again." she replied as she took the gold box from his hands. There was no need to open the box she already knew what it was inside, a box of her favorite chocolates Godiva. Then she spotted the envelope under the ribbon.
"Mr. Griffin is planning a special evening. I could tell from what he brought in my humble store." Mr. Chan speculated. "Is this a special day for the two of you?"
"Not that I'm aware of." she answered. "Good evening Mr. Chan and thank-you again."
"You are most welcome. Good evening Captain Simms and I hope that you both have a pleasant one." replied the storeowner before returning to his duties.
Karen walked out of the store and headed for her car. Once inside the vehicle again she opened the envelope to read the message inside. It read:
To My Lady,
I hope you will forgive me my little deception. I wanted to make sure I had time to get everything ready at your apartment before you got there. So I deceived you into thinking that you had to do the shopping when it was all ready done. I hope the chocolates will help you forgive my transgression. The poem is about how sweet you has made my life.

Part 10
Karen looked up and there was The Ancient standing before her car smiling at her. Her first though was that Kermit had gone mystic on her no mercenary planning. Then she got out of her car and waited for him as he walked over to her.
"Greeting Captain." said the cheerful elderly gentleman.
"Hello. I see that he has you involved with this too."
"I enjoy being involved with what brings others happiness." he confessed. "Are not Kermit's gifts bringing you happiness."
"Kermit doesn't have to give me anything to make me happy. It's him that makes me happy."
"He is aware of that. A gift is truly a gift when it is given to someone who wants only the giver not what is given."
"Why is he doing this? This isn't like him. Blake thinks that someone has put a substitute in his place."
"That is a good one." he said while laughing, "You know in your heart why he is doing this."
"I think so. He want's me to know he loves me and he want's to help me forget the pain I'm in because of not being able to adopt Abby."
"This is not just about you. Kermit is easing his own pain by concentrating on you. In some ways he is in more pain than you are. That baby was his way to have a second chance at sharing a child with you. He has been in pain from the loss of a child since he sent you back to your husband carrying his child."
"He told you? I didn't want to go back. He convinced me that we had to do what was best for our child. If his enemies knew about the baby and me they would have used that against him to get something they wanted from him. Why does his enemies want his twins?"
"You must not think let alone say anything about them. Soon you may know the story but not now there is still danger for all of you." He warned as he planted a though in her mind about not thinking about Kermit's older children. Because of Abby it had been easy to keep her from figuring out about Jim and Angel but too many clues had been dropped for that to last much longer. Mary Margaret had already guessed the secret but they had been able to keep anyone from believing her.
"What were we talking about?" Karen asked shaking headed tiring to regain her train of thought.
"Nothing important. This is the gift he wished me to bring to you." He said as he handed her a tiny square box warped with the now familiar green paper. She opened it to reveal a pair of green jade heart earrings with carved roses that matched the necklace that she had gotten from Blake.
"They're beautiful." was all she could think to say.
"You will be the most beautiful woman at that opening tomorrow but not because of his gifts but because of the love in both your hearts."
"Thank-you. I'll remember that," she said as she kissed his check in gratitude.
"Bloody Marvelous!" he explained after the kiss. "You almost made me forget the envelope that goes with the present." Then he handed it to her. "Now it's time to take my leave of you. For tonight think only of Kermit and making him happy. Do not let your grief or you're shared past spoil what he is trying to do."
"Thank-you for your advice and I have a good idea on how I'm going to make him happy."
"He is a lucky man!" he said with a knowing grin and turned and left before she could say any more.
Karen just stared after him as she felt her cheeks turn red. Was he teasing her or did he really know what her plans for Kermit were. With a Shoalin priest you never know.
She opened the envelope and read:
To My Lady,
The earrings are to tell you again that my heart is yours. The first heart is for the past, the second for the present, and the third is for our future. When you wear the set remember their meaning. Now please hurry home to me.

You And I
My Hand is lonely for your clasping, dear:
She didn't need a second request. All she could think about was his arms and her plans for thanking him. All those tidbits that she had picked up on the vice squad were going to pay off tonight.

Part 11
As she walked into her apartment she called out Kermit's name but received no answer. She placed what she was carrying on the table next to the front door. Then she noticed what was sitting on the table. A bottle of Champagne with an envelope tied to it by a green ribbon. She chuckled softly to herself as she reached for the note. Then she stopped and looked around her. Her instincts were telling her she was being watched. Kermit! She had been following a trail of breadcrumbs that he had laid out for her. He was leading her somewhere or to something and it wasn't over yet. What ever he was up to meant a lot to him and she would play it out his way. She opened the note and read:
To My Lady;
This champagne is for tonight, not tomorrow. If you agree to some plans I have then we will have something to celebrate. If you do not agree then I will have something to drown my sorrows in.

Here with a little bread beneath the Bough,
PS Don't worry about taking care of the things you brought home. I will take care of that. Just go take a shower or bath, which ever will wash away the cares of the day best for you. Don't worry about time we have all night and you are definitely worth waiting for. You will also find your next surprise waiting there for you.
Plans, for what? Kermit you do love being the flamboyant man of mystery. And just how far was Kermit going with this tale of his.

Part 12
Nothing in the bathroom seemed out of place. She stood in the center of it wearing nothing but her bathrobe and slippers looking for her next surprise. She had decided on a shower. Kermit may not be running out of patience but she was! Part of her wanted to find him and drag him into the shower with her. No she was going to stay with the program and she wondered if he knew the effect that this was having on her. It wasn't the gifts but the notes and poetry that was making her crazy with desire. Then she spotted it! A small antique bottle was sitting on the vanity with an envelope tied to it, again with a green ribbon. It had an old fashion stopper instated of a cap. Once the stopper was pulled out she could smell flowers.
The smell of Chinese crab apple blossoms. The smell took her back in time to one of the few warm days they had had this spring and sitting in the small lawn of the hospital with Abby and Kermit. The trees had just blossomed and they filled the air with their perfume. Abby was finally well and there was still hope they could get custody of her. She sat on a blanket that came from her car as Kermit and Abby were laying on their stomachs eye to eye, with his shades safe in his jacket pocket. He had taken off his tie was trying to get Abby to crawl by putting it just out of her reach. And she was trying. Any tie that Kermit wore for months now had fascinated Abby. They were her favorite toys and she a ruined more of them than they could remember with her chewing on them or spitting up on them. It had gotten so bad that now he always had a spare one in his car. Then the tears came. That bittersweet memory was one of the happiest days she could remember. She washed away the tears and put aside the memory. She would read the note after her shower when the moment of grief had past.
Karen stood looking at herself in the bathroom mirror. Now she was showered and her hair was blow-dried. She added just a little makeup and now for her gift. Then she remembered the note. This one read:
To My Lady,
The Ancient made this perfume for you. Its smell will forever remind both of us of the precious months we had with our daughter. She is our daughter no matter what anyone says! Now for her sake we must let her go but her memory will be part of our lives forever. I promise you that I will always look after her from a distance as I will always look after her mother. But I hope not from a distance. We will get past the grief together but if I lose you there would be nothing left in this world for me except loneliness and sorrow.

Miss You
Miss you, miss you, miss you:
Miss you, miss you. miss you.
Oh, I miss you, miss you!
Miss you, miss you, miss you!
The poem said it all. Everywhere she went there was something to make her think of Abby. I do miss you but I've got to go on. I promise you my child I'll love your Daddy for both of us. No I have to love him for all three of us. For your big brother, too. With that she wiped away a tear put on some perfume and headed for her bedroom to decide what to wear for him.

Part 13
When she got to her bedroom there was no need to decide what to wear for him. A white satin negligee that had not been they're when she left lay on her bed waiting for her. She picked it up and smiled. There was envelope sitting on her pillow. She laid the gown back down then reached for her note. This one read:
To My Lady,
It may look like I brought you another gift but this time I brought something for myself. A man may buy a negligee for a woman but does it with himself in mind. I'm waiting for you in the kitchen to discuss those plans I mentioned.
"K"
My Luve's Like a Red, Red Rose
O my love's like a red, red rose,
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
PS Please excuse the last stanza of the poem. I'm not sending it to tell you I'm going away. It's just so beautiful that I had to use it.
"Not bad for a woman your age Karen Simms." she said to herself as she stood before the mirror. It revealed nothing but with it's buttons just covering what was needed to be covered it promised a lot. The negligee in some way reminded her of a wedding gown with the long sleeves, tight wrist and of course the color and the material. That was the one thought that she keep pushing out of her mind. She would not let herself hope that all this was leading up to a proposal. She had promised herself since she realized that she wanted him back that she would never demand anything from him. He had to be the one to suggest that kind of commitment. So she would never even let herself think about what a marriage between them would be like. Any way all she truly needed was to know and that he was her lover.

Part 14
Karen heard him in the kitchen as she quietly left the bedroom. He was humming to himself as he prepared their meal. She remembered asking him once where he learned to cook. From his mother was his answer. Kermit didn't talk about his parents often but when he did there was love in his voice. She had been watching him as she remembered. He had been chopping something when he turned and saw her standing there. Putting the knife down he wiped his hands on a towel and walked over to her.
"You're more beautiful than I could have imagined." he said with a smile. Then she noticed his shades were off. She watched his face brightening as he looked at her in the negligee he bought her. She turned around so he could see the whole effect.
"It's beautiful. They are all beautiful. Thank-you." she said. Then she couldn't help herself she had to tease him. She said as she put her arms around his neck and pulled him close. "She must have been quite a woman for you to feel this guilty."
"What!?" he exclaimed.
"Just teasing." she whispered just before she kissed him. Then it was Karen's turn to surprise Kermit. Her kiss started as a thank-you then it escalated to something more. As she kissed him her hands slipped from his neck. One encircled his waist while the other began to undo his tie. Her lips moved to his freshly shaved chin. She could smell his aftershave mixing with her perfume the same way she hoped that their bodies would soon be mixing, not knowing where one ended and the other began. Then she stopped kissing him and pulled herself away from him but not completely out of his arms so that her hands could undo the buttons on his shirt. One of his hands gripped both of hers and stopped her.
'Karen there is something that I want to ask you that will make what you're doing all the sweeter."
"Kermit, then you better ask me that question right now!" there was conviction in her voice. "I love your presents but the love notes and poetry have been acting like a aphrodisiac. The only thing I can think about is how much I want to make love to you."
"I assure you, My Lady that I want you just as much if not more. I almost lost you last night without ever being able to tell you what you mean to me. The Ancient pointed that out to me and a few other things. Those presents are for all the ones I couldn't give you though the years and wanted too. But this is the one I wanted the most to give you but didn't have the courage." with that said he pulled out a jewelry case from his pocket while he still held her close. "Karen would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
It felt like her heart skipped a beat. This was the one thing that that she wanted and the one thing that she wouldn't consider. "Kermit, I love you and I want to me your wife more than anything."
He pulled her close to kisses her then he just held her like if he let her go she would vanish like a dream. He had done it. She was going to be his but she had always been his. He knew that like he knew his own name.
"Kermit." she said as she stirred in his arms. "Is that my engagement ring?"
"Oh yeah." he said as he let her go and open the case in his hand. "It's more than an engagement ring. These belonged to my parents. "
Karen looked at the three rings inside the case. A pear shape diamond in gold setting with the gold wedding bands to match. He took the diamond ring out of the case and placed it on her finger then he kissed her hand and then her lips.
"Kermit it's, their beautiful." she said in a voice that was quivering with emotion. She looked at it and saw for the first time the delicate carvings of a rose on either side of the diamond.
"My parents didn't believe in taking anything to their graves. They wanted their rings to be passed down so that the symbols of their love would always be symbols of love. They hoped it would be a grandchild of a great-grandchild that would use them but they didn't live long enough to see their grandchildren out of childhood. On her deathbed my mother gave them to Marliyn. My father had died a few hours before from the same car accident. She made Marliyn promise to keep them for me until I proposed to the right woman never knew about that promise until I called her today and told her that was going to ask you to marry me. I got them by special messenger an hour ago."
"You feel guilty about not being there when they died?" it was more a statement then a question. Now she was beginning to figure out why he rarely mentioned his parents.
"I was off fighting some dirty little war with Blaisdell instead of being there when my family needed me. Marliyn had to take care of everything including our little brother and she had just gotten married a few months before. What made it worst was that no sooner did she get them buried then she found out she was pregnant and then they told her I was dead. David couldn't handle it. He started taking crack to hide from his pain. By the time I escaped and got home Marilyn was in the hostipal fighting to keep her baby and David was living on the streets."
"Kermit you had no way of knowing that was going to happen and you got home as soon as you could." she said trying to comfort him. This was the part of his personality she feared. His insistence on blaming himself for things out of his control. It could someday destroy him. "You got David off crack and helped him put his life back together when your life was in pieces. He didn't die as teenager and Marliyn didn't lose her baby because you were there for them when you should have been in a hostipal being taking care of yourself."
"How did you know that?"
"I asked John how the two of you meet thinking it was some kind of CIA and MI6 joint mission. He told me that he first met you in that prison camp. He said that one of the guards took special delight in torturing you and because he had the cell across from you he couldn't help but see what that sadistic bastard did to you. He also said when the two of escaped he made sure that that guard never tortured anyone again. Then he mentioned what you came home too. I never mentioned it because I didn't want to bring back any nightmares. He also said that you are one of the strongest men he had ever meet and one of the most caring and if I ever hurt you he'd lose my bank accounts on me."
That made Kermit's sober look turn into a smile. "John and I have been though a lot together. Blaisdell was my leader and I would follow him into some hell and out the other side but John is the friend that I when though that hell with. We both would make it back time after time because we took care of each other."
"Kermit I can't begin to understand the life you led before the 101st but I don't have to. I know that there are probably going to be times that you leave me for some mercenary mission and I know that I can't stop you. Just remember you can trust me and that I'll be here when you get back."
"For a person who never lived the life you do a good job of understanding it. Karen I'm not hooked on the danger anymore so if I do go on any mercenary mission it will be because a friend needs my help no other reason. What I want is to spend the rest of my life with you. I wasted twenty years not being with you I don't want to lose any more time."
"Then let's stop talking and start making love before I have to take another shower. This time a cold one."
"Oh, Yeah."

Part 15
Karen woke to the sound of running water and no Kermit beside her. What was he up to now? She couldn't remember a time that Kermit took a bath, just showers but that was the tub filling. With curiosity getting the best of her, she slipped out of bed and into her robe and slippers to see what her new fiancé was up to. Her first step reminded her of what last night had been like as she sat back on the bed in pain. Her inner thigh muscles and crotch felt like she had been riding a horse for the first time. Now she knew why he was taking a bath. They had tried some exotic positions last night as well as this morning and now both of them were paying the price with sore muscles. The pain was a small price to pay for a night of that much passion. They had both thrown their inhibitions away and did things that they had only fantasized doing.
The water had stopped running and then she heard him get into the tub. With that sound she once again stood up and slowly walked to the bathroom. He sat in her ancient crow foot tub, a luxury left behind by a former tenant of her apartment, with his eyes closed and his arms resting on the edge. When she entered the room he opened his eyes and offered her his hand. There was no need for words; his invitation to join him was obvious. Removing her robe she let it drop to the floor as she slipped off her slippers. After taking his hand she let him help her into the tub. She lowered her body into the water and settled in between his legs with her back resting on his chest.
"Good morning, sweetcakes." he said once she was settled in his arms.
"Good morning doesn't describe it, Kermie." Was her reply, using the nickname he hated, then pulled his head down to kiss him? "You're sore too? It must have been those Karma Sutra positions we tried."
"I've got to remember what poetry does to you," he said not wanting to admit that last night had taken a toll on him. "You were amazing last night."
"Thank-you. You're not going to need poetry to get those moves whenever you want them. Now that I've tried them I'm kicking myself for not trying them on you sooner. Have I ever told you your one hell of a lover?"
"Not that I can recall but I'm glad you think so. We spent to much time talking about the past last night isn't it about time we started talking about the future?"
"That sounds good to me." she concurred then kissed his cheek and snuggled into his chest while hugging his arms that encircled her. "I want you to tell me want you want our future to be like."
"What about what you want?"
"I go last then we can discuss what's best for both of us."
"Sounds like a plan. Is a week from today at sunrise in Caine's roof top garden a good plan for the wedding."
"What! I see the surprises aren't over with but why so soon? Are you afraid you'll change your mind?"
"Never! It's because I don't want to wait any longer for you to be my wife and there are some things happening that are going to change my life forever that could get in the way if we don't get married very soon."
"What things?" she asked with fear in her voice as she pulled out of his arms to look into his eyes. "You're dying on me?"
"No! These are things I want to happen. What others and I have been working to make happen for a very long time. I want to tell you everything but if I do before everything's in place it might cost you your life so please trust me for a little while longer."
"Of course I'll trust you. Are these things going to keep us apart?"
"If things work out the way I want them to, we'll be seeing each other more than ever."
"I think I like that idea. I also like your idea about the wedding. I couldn't go though a big wedding again. Something simple with just close friends and family they're with Peter doing the ceremony. But why sunrise?"
"Griffin family tradition but if you want to change it that's fine."
"No, if that your family's tradition then that's how we'll do it. It'll make me feel like part of your family."
"You already are part of my family, the most important part. Speaking of family there is one thing I would like to talk about, if you can? Karen, Abby made me realize how much I want to have a child with you. I not trying to replace Abby, nothing ever can, but the need is still there."
"You want us to have child of our own. One no can take away from us."
"Yes."
"That was the first thought I had after you asked me to marry you. Does he want a baby? Do you want to start working on that family today?"
"I wish we started working on a family last night."
"If I don't take my pill this morning we will have. I forgot it yesterday."
"That not like you."
"I wasn't thinking about anything yesterday but making sure that those bastards didn't get away with what they did to me. I don't want to talk about that again until the trial. Have you picked out where we're going on our honeymoon?"
"Oh yeah. I am taking you to a place where I can have you all to myself. No phones, no beepers, no computers and most of all no other people. It's where I go at Christmas."
"You're going to take me where you go at Christmas. Can you tell me where this little piece of heaven is."
"I'll tell you on the plane but this much I will tell you. It's an island and you can bring the same kind of casual clothing you wear here this time of year."
"An island, that's all! Well at least you told me what to pack. One minute, how do we get this through the department on such short notice and how to I get Todd here in time."
"You're the Captain, sign the papers and I'll get them through the right channels. About Todd your forgetting we have a friend with his own private jet whom does things like that for a living. Todd will be here in time. You call him today and see when he wants to be picked up and Jim will do the rest. Also I made a deal with Bernie, he gets to dress the wedding party. You need to pick who's in the wedding today. He wants to see the whole party tomorrow at his fashion house."
"Tomorrow? Who are you asking to be your best man?"
"John. I've already asked him."
"Then I'll ask Megan. I'd ask your sister but she has her hands full with David."
"Your right there. Noah is leaving for a business trip Monday so she's will be alone with the kids for a few days and the baby has an ear infection."
"Kermit let's talk about the rest over breakfast I'm starved and this waters getting cold."
"You should be we never got supper. How does steak, eggs and homefries sound."
"Great, if you add toast and coffee. I'll even help you cook them."
"No you would. You have a call to make and a dress to try on. I'll take care of breakfast," he said as he watched her to get out of the tub. He couldn't take his eyes off her body as his mind wandered back to the pleasures of the night before and how that glorious body had been surrendered to him and how he had surrendered his body to it's owner.
"Kermit are you going to sit in that tub all day?" She asked when she noticed that he hadn't moved.
"Sorry, I'm just admiring the view and remembering that the view is as good to touch as to look at."
"I'm glad you like it." she said then dropped the towel she just picked up and knelt down beside the tub and kissed him.
"I love you, sweetcakes." he said after the kiss.
"I love you but don't call me sweetcakes, Kermie."

After the day's loud strife;
I need your calm all other things above
After the stress of life.

After the day's great sun.

And do not call him names,
As "Slimy-skin," or "Polly-wog"
Or likewise, "Uncle James,"
Or "Gape-a-grin," or "Toad-gone-wrong,"
Or "Billy Bandy-knees:"

To epithets like these,
A treatment kind and fair,

They are extremely rare.)

In delicate from and Grecian face,-
A beautiful, incarnate song,
A marvel of harmonious grace;
And yet I know the truth I speak:
From these gay groups she stands apart,
A rose upon her tender cheek,
A thorn within her heart.
Fair tremulous lips and shining hair,
A some thing born of mournful dreams
Breather round her sad enchanted air;
No blithesome thoughts at hide and seek
From out her dimples smiling start;
If still the rose be on her cheek,
A thorn is in her heart.
Your whispered vow and yearning eyes
Yon marble Clytie pillared near
Could move as soon to soft replies:
Or, if she thrill at words you speak,
Love's memory prompts the sudden start;
The rose has paled upon her cheek,
The thorn has pierced her heart.

And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills and fields,
Wood or steepy mountain yield.
Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow rivers to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals.
And a thousand fragrant posies,
A cap of flower, and a krill
Embroidered all with leaves
of myrtle:
Which from our pretty lambs we pull;
Fair lined slippers for the cold,
With buckles of the purest gold;
With coral clasps and amber studs:
And if these pleasure my thee move,
Come live with me, and be my love;
For thy delight each May morning:
If these delights thy mind may move,
Then live with me and be my love,

Part 7
It smites my soul with sudden sickening;
It binds my being w
This want of you.
It creeps upon me when the day is done;
It hammers at my heart the long night through-
This want of you.
Oh, all the day within my heart it cries,
Old a your absence, yet each moment new-
This want of you.
It leaps within my heart and you are-where?
God has forgotten, or he never knew-
This want of you.
Part 8
I fashion, to myself, the tenderness
Of my glad welcome: I shall tremble-yes;
And touch her, as when first in the old days
I touched her girlish hand, nor dared upraise
Mine eyes, such was my faint heart's sweet distress
Then silence: and the perfume of her dress:
The room will sway a little, and a haze
Cloy eyesight-soul-sight, even-for a space:
And tears-yes; and the ache here in the throat,
To know that I so ill deserve the place
Her arms make for me; and the sobbing note
I stay with kisses, ere the tearful face
Again is hidden in the old embrace.

Not only for what you are,
But for what I am
When I am with you.
Not only for what
You have made of yourself,
But for what
You are makin
g of me.
For the part of me
That you bring out;
I love you
For putting your hand
Into my heaped-up heart
And passing over
All the foolish, weak things
That you can't help
Dimly seeing there,
And for drawing out
Into the light
All the beautiful belongings
That no one else looked
Quite far enough to find.
Are helping me to make
Of the lumber of my life
Not a tavern
But a temple"
Out of the works
I my every day
Not a reproach
But a song.
Because you have done
More than any creed
Could have done
To make me good,
And more than any fate
Could have done
To make my happy.
Without a touch,
Without a word,
Without a sign.
You have done it
By being yourself.
Perhaps that is what
Being a friend means
After all.
Part 10
My ear is tired waiting for your call.
I want your strength to help, your laugh to cheer;
Heart, soul and senses need you, one and all.
I droop without your full, frank sympathy
We ought to be together-you and I:
We want each other so, to comprehend
The dream, the hope, things planned, or seen, or wrought.
Companion, comforter and guide and friend,
As much as love asks love, does thought ask thought.
Life is so short, so fast the lone hours fly,
We ought to be together, you and I.

And the voice of you.
You're on every corner,
Every turn and twist,
Every old familiar spot
Whispers how you're missed.
Everywhere I go
There are poignant memories
Dancing in a row,
Silhouette and shadow
Of your form and face
Substance and reality
Everywhere displace.
How I miss you, Girl!
There's a strange, sad silence
"Mid the busy whirl,
Just as tho' the ordinary,
Daily things I do
Wait with me, expectant,
For a word from you.
Nothing now seems true,
Only that 'twas Heaven
Just to be with you.
David Cory
Part 13
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune!
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Though it were ten thousand mile.
Robert Burns
