In Frilond, any spell formula is hard to come by, and some are much harder to find than others. Many spells are rare because they were actively suppressed by the Church, while others were simply forgotten or misplaced during the dark years after the fall of Northern Tynar. What wizardry that has survived is precarious; the chain of transmission is always fragile—sometimes only one copy of a spell formula has existed in the north at one time. With no means of mass reproduction and limited archives, spell formulae can all-too-easily become lost or removed from circulation.
Therefore, most spells in Frilond are assigned one of the following levels of frequency: Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Very Rare. Most spell casters will have at least heard some mention of even very rare spells—descriptions of such spells, while often inaccurate and incomplete, circulate widely among wizards. The spell frequency modifies associated Spellcraft checks as well as the any costs associated with the spell.
| Frequency | Change of Occurance | Spellcraft Modifier | Price Modifier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 60% | +0 | - |
| Uncommon | 25% | +2 | x2 |
| Rare | 10% | +4 | x3 |
| Very Rare | 5% | +6 | x4 |
However, it is important to note that the spell frequency tables are not comprehensive. There are several unique spells circulating in Frilond, or spells that have been hoarded by a few casters—to say nothing of lost spells that as yet remain to be rediscovered. Specialists often have access to rarer spells from within their chosen school.
