Although we use AD&D rules for our campaign, the following games have heavily influenced Frilond.
Ars Magica: The Art of Magic. 4th Edition. Roseville, MN: Atlas Games, 1996. Ars Magica has shaped the entire story-telling branch of RPGs, and its Mythic Europe setting is a thoughtful, classy combination of history and fantasy. Although the game has suffered from having too many publishers in too few years, Atlas seems committed to giving Ars Magica its due.
Vampire: The Dark Ages. Clarkston, CA: White Wolf Game Studio, 1997. Great art and good writing combine to produce a nicely dark and moody atmosphere. Overall, a solid entry—despite loose historicity and an occasionally histrionic tone.
Chivalry and Sorcery. 3rd Edition. Highlander Designs, 1996. Despite clunky mechanics and low production quality, C&S still has some excellent material for campaigns using a feudal setting. Britannia Game Designs has recently acquired the rights to C&S, so we'll have to see what happens to the game.
King Arthur Pendragon. 4th Edition. Oakland, CA: Chaosium, 1993. A marvelous blend of historical, legendary, and literary interpretations of the Arthurian mythos. Intelligently written, Pendragon strongly emphasizes role-playing and remains one of the best values in gaming. Chaosium has recently entered into an agreement with Green Knight Publishing, so that Chaosium will continue to produce and sell Pendragon, but Green Knight is now responsible for the development and marketing of the game.
