The * Frilond * Campaign
Campaign Overview

In many respects, Frilond is a realistic setting, mirroring twelfth century Europe with similar cultures, values, and institutions. Against this backdrop we have added fantastical elements drawn from Arthurian romances, fairy tales, folk songs, as well as early fantasy writers and literary figures such as William Morris, Lord Dunsany, and Edmund Spencer.

"Frilond" (pronounced FRILL-ond) is a large subcontinent and island chain; the climate varies from arctic at the far northern reaches to temperate at the southernmost. Culturally and technologically, Frilond resembles Western Europe in the late thirteenth century. Following the collapse of the Tynar Empire, Frilond was thrown into chaos for several centuries: invasions of barbarians and humanoids had destroyed a sophisticated, civilized culture, leaving behind a rural and agrarian society. The last century, however, has seen a revival of classical learning, prompted by the Church of the Five. The Church is a pervasive and powerful institution in Frilond, analogous to the medieval Christian Church.

In Frilond, magic works—though it is rare and mysterious. There are a select few, blessed by the Five, who are able to work miracles of healing and faith. Faeries and other enchanted creatures weave spells in the wild lands. And magicians search after magical power, lost since Tynar’s fall.

Most campaign activity takes place in the Kingdom of Selcrany, a large northern country containing vast tracts of wilderness. Selcrany enjoys a strong centralized authority under King Weremach, and politically resembles England under King Henry II.

The campaign centers on a band of free men, the consortes, who have gathered together in the town of Heremac on the Frounter—a stretch of wild borderlands. Though these consortes are generally commoners or burghers, they have found themselves again and again met with great challenges and perils. They have battled ruck-men and bandits, and faced terrible horrors at Caxbrill, Lorn Abbey, and other sites across the Frounter. The consortes have travelled to strange and wondrous places, visiting the Sorcerer of the Green Tower, the Temple of the Medusae, and the Cave of the Crone. The consortes have beheld visions of St. Gerard, and have walked the Wood Wondrous to witness the miraculous birth of the babe, Agnes.

With so many accomplishments and adventures, the consortes have attracted the attention of very powerful men, including the Bishop of Canglen. But our heroes have also incurred the wrath of some powerful enemies, as well: most notably, Tim of Heremac, and Sir John the Bastard.

Many more mysteries and adventures await: wicked King Tereus and his army of rucks still occupy a large portion of the Frounter; there seems to be something rotten in the noble ranks of the Order of St. Markham; and what has happened to our heroes' friend, Sir Reginald the Penitent?

Adventure Abounds!
