Here follows a few notes on undead in our campaign. This information is not commonly known outside of ecclesiastical circles.
The undead are a class of souless monsters, neither truly dead nor alive. In general, the undead are hopelessly malevolent and will attack living beings on sight. All undead were humans who have died but have become undead through means of dark magic. They have some sort of physical form, usually related to their form in life; all undead can be turned by priests of the Five. Finally, the undead have many common immunities or resistances.
The undead are immune to all charm, sleep, and hold spells; death magic, and all poison and paralysis attacks. They are also immune to aging attacks. They do not breathe and are not affected by magics that target living beings, including spells that affect physical health such as disease or wound causing spells. Most undead are resistant or completely immune to the effects of cold-based attacks.
The undead cannot be seen by means of infravision, and they are normally able to move with absolute silence. Many mind-based attacks also do not affect undead, and it is impossible to read the thoughts of such creatures. Most illusions below fourth level cannot affect undead, including audible glamer, ventriloquism, phantasmal force, improved phantasmal force, and spectral force. Undead are not deceived by spells such as change self, blur, mirror image, or invisibility. They cannot be warded by a priest's sanctuary spell.
The incorporeal undead—ghosts, shadows, wraiths, and spectres—are unaffected by most spells that affect physical form, such as enlarge or web. Further, these undead cannot be targeted by a polymorph other spell.
The undead have several common vulnerabilities, which are detailed below:
Bless spell. A melee weapon or a missile blessed by a 3rd level good priest acts as a "magic weapon" for the purpose of hitting undead only hit by magic weapons. This effects lasts only for six rounds. If an undead is hit the bless is immediately negated. One weapon or missile can be blessed.
Holy Water. All forms of undead, as well as creatures from the lower planes are affected by holy water. The liquid burns the affected creature as if struck by acid. Damage from holy water cannot be regenerated.
A melee weapon or a missile washed in holy water acts as a "magic weapon" for the purpose of hitting undead only hit by magic weapons. This washing only lasts for six rounds. If an undead is hit the washing is negated at once. Only one weapon or missile can be washed per vial of holy water.
Holy Symbols. A pentifix is required for turning or destroying undead. Any attempt to turn undead without a pentifix will automatically fail. Further, pentifixes must be specially consecrated by a priest of at least third level in order to function as a holy symbol. The mere image, even if perfectly duplicated, will not suffice.
All undead suffer "burning" damage from actual contact with a pentifix, identical to the damage they suffer from a vial of holy water. This replaces any physical damage; a mace or crossbow bolt with a consecrated pentifix on its business end does not deal both holy symbol damage and physical damage to an undead.
The damage will occur regardless of what being actually wields or discharges the pentifix as a weapon; class and alignment have no effect. Holy symbols "strike" intangible undead or undead normally struck only by silver or magical weapons, regardless of the composition of the holy symbol.
