Lord of Ordway Barony. A young man, Alban was named to the post after the old baron was slain in battle with his own brother.

A brother in the Bergenian monastery at Heremac. Trampled by a horse but healed by Reginald the Righteous.
Aleck Rowland, Sir.
Lord of Hillsfar; vassal of Kirke. A thin, older man with thin grey hair and sad eyes, his Manor-House is in Upchurch. Captured by the Geaunt in *909, he was later rescued by the consortes. In gratitude he made Hamral a knight. The Count of Kirke has promised him his northmost Barony once Utterbol is recaptured.

Wife to Sir Aleck, a small, slight woman, with bright, mirthful eyes and white hair pulled back from her careworn face.

A son of Tereus, said to wear armor made of solid gold. Currently harrying Kirke's exiled army to the north of Heremac. His seat of power is in Wolfgare, where he has crowned himself king.

Stooped old man who works in the Thistle and Briar.

A tall, thin henchman to Tim. Hurt Mot.
Bened, Brother.
A Bergenian monk at the monastery at Lorn Pond. Bened was the assistant librarian and a dabbler in magic; he became corrupted by demonic forces. After the Abbey was destroyed, Bened haunted the catacombs below the ruins as an undead sorcerer. Bened slew both Brandon Frey and Dirk with his foul magic, and was destroyed by the consortes.

A young Seeker brother-knight, fresh from the Blackwell. Has curly-blond hair and a thin, patchy beard. Served under Gregory the Risen; died from a poisoned ruck-man blade while on Gregory's March, Caulding *909.

Woodsman from Tymgram, killed under strange circumstances west of Hoarden Hill.
Blount.
A tough veteran in service to Gower; transformed by Hecatesseus into stone, but restored by Friar Sidrach.
Bob Enfield.

A minstrel at Langdale Hall. Dresses as a gentleman, with a fine surcoat and good riding-boots. He is middle-aged, his long face weathered but still handsome, his dark hair touched with grey.

A small, thin man, Brad is a baker in Heremac. Brad is an impatient, irritable man, given to penny-pinching.
Briareus, Prince.
A son of Tereus, once commanded the rucks at Utterbol (Kirke). Infamous for his greed and his vast storehouse of treasure. Briareus was slain by Mendelor in personal combat.

A large burly cobbler in Eredy, married to Anest.
Brut, Friar.
A small, older man, thin as a reed. Yet his eyes flash with excitement, and when he speaks his voice is strong and pleasing. Leader of the Gerardian delegation in Heremac.

Busirane, Prince.
One of the ruckish sons of Tereus, infamous for his cruelty. Controls the lands formerly held by Baron Derwich. Badly wounded by the consortes twice in *910.

A mighty Black Blade captain.
Canem.
The son of Edam, Canem was seduced by the Shaithim, and convinced his father to disobey the Five's call. Canem was subsequently cursed by the Five to forever wander the earth, begetting monsters.

Seeker, former personal assistant to Master Edric. Died in the spring of *907 while on a mission to a deadly dungeon complex.
Catherine of Aurebine.
A postulant among the nuns at the Shrine of St. Marius. Catherine was born to a noble family in southern Weredrice, and studied the songs of the troubadours. She married a knight, Robert DeVay, who was killed by bandits south of Heremac.

Sir Aleck Rowland's stooped and aged porter, said to have served at Upchurch House for many years.
Charles of the Axe, Lord.
Castellan of Antace, vassal to King Weremach. Prince Busirane chopped off one of Lord Charles' hands, and the Castellan -- perhaps influenced by proximity to Lorn Abbey -- despaired at this loss. Sir Reginald the Penitent was able to restore Charles's lost hand, as well as his fighting spirit.

Tim's henchman, worked with Varick near the Citadel.

Tynan emperor; commissioned the creation of a hundred magical spears.
Claudius.
Advisor to Lord Lownell. Claudius is an older man, prone to giving tired advice. Currently assisting Sir John at Lownell Manor.
Clement.
A thin man of medium height and build in his early twenties, Clement has a fair complexion and dark hair. He has the tonsure of a clerk in minor orders, although he dresses foppishly in a red tunic with ornate embroidery. Clement's father was a poor knight who reluctantly sent his son to the cathedral school at Canglen. Clement is a wandering scholar, with some knowledge of medicine. He tends towards indolence and enjoys drinking and gambling, though he recently married Cynthia Carder and they have son named Simon. Clement has completed his studies in Canglen, and is preparing to return to Heremac.

Nobleman with holdings on the Frounter; both Clement's father and his brother served as knights under his banner.

A mysterious magician, adept at illusions, who serves the Lady of the Keep.

Brother-knight in the Seeker Order, cousin to the Baron Ordway. Leads regular patrols on the Frounter and commands the Seeker garrison in Heremac. Recently captured by ruck-men and ransomed. Led a delegation of Seekers to the siege at Antace.

Brigand on the Frounter, father to Reginald the Penitent. Slain by his own son.
Cuthred of Stowcross.
A stout serjeant, fought at the siege of Antace. Killed Orestes' brother, Enceladus.
Cynthia.
A young, attractive girl in her mid-teens, daughter of Geoffrey Carder. She was kidnapped by a band of horrible ogres in the fall of *906, but was rescued a few months later. Married to Clement and mother to young Simon.

Derwich, Baron of.
Awarded knighthood to Reginald the Righteous for recovering an enchanted sword. Killed, along with his entire family and staff, by King Tereus's troops in the invasion of *909. His ghost haunted a courtyard in his old castle, until laid to rest by Brother Tallow.
Derwich, Baroness of.
Murdered along with her sons and husband. Her ghost haunted a courtyard in her old castle, until laid to rest by Brother Tallow.
Didymus.
A great magician from antiquity, he codified the schools of magic. His Ars Magica is the standard text of magical lore.
Dirk, Friar.
A burly Gerardian in Heremac, handy with a club. A former watchman.
Dominius, Abbot.
A Bergenian, Dominius was the former Abbot and founder of Lorn Abbey. Dominius was a magician of considerable power; his assistants Cornelius and Matthew were also philosophers of similar bent. Dominius barely escaped from the destruction of the abbey, and made his way to the Bergenian Abbey at Abbermark. Dominius arranged the murder of Valerius's mother, and then took the outcast boy as his apprentice. Some years later Dominius was presumably destroyed by one of his own summonings.

Henchman of Duke Larry; killed by Shakerly.
Dunstan.
Vandoren's father. A former knight, he is now a prominent member of the Chancellery of Canglen Cathedral.
Durrell, Count of Kirke.
The brash ruler of one of the largest holdings on the Frounter. Currently in exile to the north, his knights have been sorely harried by the armies of Prince Argus. Prince Briareus currently reigns in Kirke's old castle, which has been renamed Utterbol.
Edam.
The first King of Men in Pentian mythology. His wife was Uren. After disobeying the Five's call to arms, Edam and all men were barred from the Shining City.
Edgar, Sir.
A knight, son of Lord Lownell. A wild young man, Edgar is nonetheless quieter and more thoughtful than his brother Steven.

Geoffrey's haughty and dimwitted son.
Edric the Iron Hearted, Master.
A Grand Master of the Order of St. Markham, otherwise known as the Seekers. Edric was a warrior of great renown; he was at the famed Siege of Heremac. Died 8 Firstblome *910, and succeeded by Alan of Belfort.

The Baron once ruled a large holding on the Frounter, but was corrupted by his advisor Archimedes and later killed after his brother Kay invaded the barony in *900.

Fat Bergenian in the monastery at Heremac. Assistant librarian.

Sister to Tom Golding and owner of the Bristling Boar. A matronly woman, with a great bosom, wide hips, and long brown hair. Ellen has a handsome face with bright eyes and an earnest, gap-toothed smile.

Powerful and haughty master wizard in the service of Prince Busirane. Appears as a tall, bald man in purple and gold robes.

A broadly built, coarse-looking forester in his thirties, skilled with axe and bow. He is gruff and short-tempered.

A knight and former retainer to the Baron Derwich. After witnessing the massacre at Derwich, he renounced the sword and has been living as a hermit in the occupied lands.

Young girl from Vesay, died of the pox *908. Her mutilated corpse was pulled from the Corin.

A decrepit, lecherous old merchant from Canglen. Once engaged to Cynthia.
Horatius.
Emperor of Northern Tynar, *148-*164. Converted to Pentianity in *158 and outlawed all pagan religions in Frilond.
Hraust.
The Dragon of the Mountain. A great, terrible dragon that has caused great havoc in the past. Lairs somewhere in the foreboding Sheldings. It said that St. Tolbert once drove Hraust off.

Old, stern man, reports to the Bishop of Canglen. Traveled to Heremac to investigate the incident at Vesay.
Hugh, Brother.
A Bergenian monk from the Abbey of St. Rosemund in Abbermark. Brother Hugh is a former soldier, and has conducted intensive investigations into several mysterious incidents concerning the consortes.
Huon of Gower, Baron.
One of King Weremach's most loyal vassals.

Ancient Herachean writer; an authority on medicine.
Isabelle.
Beautiful young daughter of the Baron Derwich; the betrothed of Baron Tryermaine and the only living child of Derwich. Isabelle had been staying at the priory at Bouton Abbas, awaiting her marriage, when the rucks invaded. Currently living at the Shrine of St. Marius. A friend of Sir Reginald the Penitent, Isabelle sent Reginald on a mission into the occupied lands, trying to verify rumors that her brother Frederick had somehow survived the massacre.

A fat knight; lost his leg several years ago while fighting against ruck-men. Retired to Vesay with a small fortune. Husband to Alba.

Young, sullen, and avaricious merchant from Canglen, nephew to Hiram.
John Small.
Young boy encountered in the Westwoode after dark; claimed to be the son of foresters. Was seen to mysteriously transform into a cowled figure.
John the Bastard, Lord.
Also known as "The Lordship." The illegitimate son of the Baronet of Lownell and Maud the weaver. Raised in Lownell, and made his father's squire. Eventually knighted. Used to haunt Canglen, and is said to have important friends in the Church there. Connected with Tim. Once installed as ruler of Lownell Barony, under King Tereus, John was later usurped by Prince Nestor, and for a time was a prisoner in Lownell. Sir John has since worked his way back into the graces of the rucks, and once more rules Lownell. His insignia is a white lily.

Famed Pentian king, warrior, and bard. Led his tribe out of gnoll slavery by slaying the gnollish champion Aliath with his bare hands.

Mad Tynan emperor, tolerated a wife who openly practiced sorcery; this folly provoked his assassination.

A mysterious and malevolent figure encountered in the Wood Wondrous.

A pair of brothers, loyal to the Lady of the Keep.
Lady of the Keep, The.
A powerful and mysterious enchantress, also known as Godwin's Master. She is an ally to King Tereus and a bitter rival of Lord John the Bastard. She has ties to Gory-Moon rucks and is served by the Knights of the Scarlet Banner and a figure known only as the Consort.
Larith.
Wicked daughter of Edam and Uren, and sister to Canem. Convinced her father to disobey the Five; in punishment she is forced to wander the earth forever, spawning abominations.
Larry (Lawrence; Duke Larry; Lord Larry).
Intense man of medium height with short, dirty, fair-colored hair. His face is lean and angular, his eyes almost feminine. Larry has thin arms, knotted with muscles. A bandit from northern Selcrany, near Rallway, Larry tried to pass himself off as a noble to marry Cynthia Carder. Larry's henchmen badly beat Clement and Larry himself killed Shakerly 13 Firstblome, *907. Larry stole a magical helm from the Seekers, and was killed 2 Drieland *908.

Maggie is an important figure in Heremac, controlling many criminal enterprises. She has many well-placed contacts and much inside knowledge. Once friendly to St. James, she now holds a serious grudge against him.

Head of Canglen Diocese, which encompasses most of the Frounter. Reports to Archbishop Nicolas. Visited Heremac in the late summer, *908.

Villager in Vesay. Daughter to Anna and sister to Martha and Helen.

Thin, red-cheeked weaver in Dowdling. Widowed in the spring *906.
Matthew, Prior.
Former prior of Lorn Abbey, second only to Abbot Dominius. The prior was a secret magician and after his death became an undead horror.

A weaver at Lownell; mother to Sir John the Bastard. Haughty and unpleasant.
Maximilian.
Pontiff; declared in *563 that Royan Order monks may practice magic.
Merovan.
Famous Werdricean ruler, Fifth century. Merovan united the Pentian lands and was crowned Emperor by the Pontiff. His empire lasted until *450. A popular legend holds that Merovan and all his knights lie bound in an enchanted slumber under a faery mound, and will only be awakened as Reckoning Day and the end of this world draws near. Then they will arise and lead the Pentian armies in the Last Battle against the Shaithim.

Reginald (the Righteous, Evilsbane, the Penitent), Sir.
Devout Pentian warrior. Traveled the Frounter for many years, performing good deeds. Father was the infamous brigand, Crueltooth; Reginald's mother was a wanton woman who nevertheless had a vision of the Five. She left Reginald in the care of a Bergenian abbey near Canglen, and herself entered into a nunnery. Reginald eventually met his father and slew him in battle. The guilt for this deed drove Reginald into the Bergenian monastery at Heremac, were he dwelt as a mysterious, silent oblate for four years. Reginald has since assumed the title "Reginald the Penitent" and is once again active on the Frounter. He has slain a giant near Bellenore and has undertaken missions for Lady Isabelle of Derwich. In the spring of *910 Reginald was captured and imprisoned by the Geaunt, until rescued by the consortes. The next spring Reginald undertook a quest to restore the maimed Lord Charles of Antace. After a long and arduous trek to the end of the world, Reginald restored Charles in the fall of *913, and the two led reinforcements to the siege at Antace.

An old, scholarly priest, assigned to St. Lamar parish in Vesay over twenty years ago. Corrupted by a blasphemous book, he unwittingly performed dark rites.

Tuck.
A former henchman of Tim's, said to be ugly, greedy, and treacherous. Stole a magic helmet from Tim; holed up in Deal for several months. Was captured by the consortes, and then in turn taken by Godwin and his ruckish friends. Tuck escaped from Godwin, and in the confusion surrounding the Black Blade invasion, headed to Antace. Tuck sought Liam's treasure and was somehow transformed from a violent, rude bully to the kind, courteous fellow known as Tom Tuck.

His house in Heremac acquired a most unsavory reputation before being burnt to the ground. Current whereabouts unknown.

A nobleman hailing from the Harpish border, now commander of the Seekers at Canglen. Unpopular with many of his fellow Brother-Knights. Said to be on good terms with Bishop Martin, Abbot Peter, and even Pope Augustine. Wich was a strong contender to replace Edric as grand master of the Order. Wich employed Tim and Varick in an unsuccessful bid to tip the election in his favor.

An elderly woman of Heremac, keeps a boarding house near the Old Well where Duke Larry and his men stayed. The widow was assaulted by Shakerly and badly injured while he attempted to get even with Larry.
