Continued from The Toll.
The consortes reel in the wake of Hecatesseus's devastating raid on Upchurch, an assault which destroyed the Great Hall and resulted in the deaths of Sir Will Garnfellow and Oswald's son, Leofric. Valerius interviews his two young wards, Helena and Hermia, who admit to dispatching several ruckish raiders all by themselvesthough the girls claim no knowledge of the mysterious grey rider that had been seen in the woods the night of the raid. Valerius praises the girls for their service and then rejoins his fellows for a debate on an appropriate reprisal.
Vandoren considers using a powerful charm to send tormenting nightmares upon Hecatesseus. Friar Sidrach is dispatched to the rucks of the Ebon Quill to whip up support for a raid against Hecatesseus. Noxumbra consults with nearby birds to learn more information about the raiding party that had attacked Upchurch. And Purer seeks guidance from his patron, St. Iseltis. In the end, the consortes decide they must return to Derwich and eliminate any possibility of Hecatesseus reanimating the fallen Colossus of the Limites.
The die cast, the group then travels to Utterbol, where Vandoren and Sir Hamral are granted an audience with Sir Durell. They are able to persuade the Count of Kirke to join in an attack on Derwich, knowing that such an assault is risky and leaves Utterbol exposed with a weakened garrison.
Vandoren sings up a charm that then transports the consortes to the cave of the Ebon Quill near Eredy. The group is met warmly by Prince Nestor and his band of Pentian rucks. The converted rucks eagerly sign on to join the raid on Derwich, and immediately begin preparing to march on the excavation site.
Sir Hamral, Vandoren, Purer, Mendelor, Renton, Owen, St. James, Dominic, and Valerius then head into the occupied lands, where the woodsman Mendelor leads the group safely past the ruckish patrols to the excavation site. The consortes then wait for Kirke and Nestor to draw nigh to Derwich before launching their raid. The excavation site, but a few miles distant from Derwich Castle, is heavily protected by Cataphract guards and a terrible construct of bronze known as the Goliath that Burns.
The battle at the excavation site is fierce and bloody. There the consortes catch their first glimpse of the Colossus, a gigantic bronze statue sixty feet long, intact but unmoving, lying on the floor of the excavation pit. The Goliath that Burns is a much smaller version of the Colossus, some fifteen feet tall but shimmering with heat as if a terrible fire burnt within its metal frame.
The fighters and the sneaks concentrate on battling the Cataphract guards while Valerius conjures up monsters to fight the Goliath. Meanwhile, Dominic flies high above the battlefield, watching for eagles and hurling bolts of lightning down upon the Colossus, blasting its metal frame to molten bits.
In time, both the Colossus and the Goliath are destroyed, the Cataphracts guards are all killed, and the remaining Black-Blades scattered into the nearby forests. Just as sounds of battle begin to come from Derwich castle, the battered consortes pull out of the excavation site and withdraw to the nearby wood, where Valerius conjurers up a door to his magnificent mansion.
After a night of relative peace within the wizard's house, the party arises to find two of Busirane's wretched half-troll monsters waiting outside, along with Hecatesseus himself. The monster's keen senses prevent the group from using an invisibility charm to sneak past, and most transportation magick cannot be used while within the mansion. So the group steels itself for battle and then plunges headlong into the midst of the waiting enemy. While the monsters lash out with their great, spiked chains, Hecatesseus lets fly his baleful enchantments. After considerable effort the consortes finally establish a toehold and begin pushing the monsters back from the doorway of the mansion. Several of the fighters rush Hecatesseus and nearly pummel him down, but the furious wizard floats up above the battlefield. And as soon as his two monsters are slain, the master wizard disappears in a flash. Weary but victorious, the group turns back to Utterbol.
