Shakerly approaches Tim to inquire about employment (!). Tim suggests that Shakerly could root out a nasty bunch of ruck-men who had ambushed one of Tim's recent shipments.
The company soon finds out about Shakerly's interview. Several members are skeptical about Tim's intentions; others speculate about the exact terms of "employment." In the end, it is decided that the party will try to find these rucks. A new party member is found: one Mendelor, a woodsman.
The company reaches St. Dreytan. Inquiries reveal that the villagers have been plagued by some livestock theft, and have sighted skulking forms in the shadows of the local woods. That night, a restless Shakerly spies some shadowy figures, but they evade him.
In the morning the party heads into Willoghby Copse. They find a strange scarecrow on the path, but are suddenly pinned down by a deadly hail of archery. A frantic search reveals that the unseen snipers are using tunnels to move through the wood. Valerius discovers that he can locate the position of the snipers with the magical orb. The wounded party retreats to St. Dreytan.
An ambush is set up in town; that night four figures steal in to snatch Shakerly's donkey. In the fight that follows, the four are slain. As the party investigates the bodies, more arrows streak in. Shakerly charges into the brush, only to be stopped in his tracks. Most of the party has been hurt in the fighting, and everyone is tired. On the ground are sprawled four dead ruck-men.
