Among the interesting geological features of the area are the two deep trenches or crevasses in the lake bottom.  While the normal deep area is 18 to 21 feet deep these two areas are 25-28 feet in depth.  These “deep holes” were identified by the State Dept of Highways when they were planning the limited access portion of US #1.   Subsequently , eel fishermen complained to me that their traps  at  these locations were bringing in very sickly or dead eels.    Because of curiosity about this underwater crevasse, the Friends of Casco Bay  undertook  a sampling  project. One year's sampling effort is included as a spread sheet.  Comparing this data with earlier data taken in 1973 and published by Wright-Pierce Engineering, shows anaerobic bottom conditions during  the Summer and very little change over  the 25 year period.

Further analysis is anticipated and will be reported when available.
