MN83803AK
Panasonic Services Co. Parts Division
(800) 833 9626
Note: Panasonic now lists the MN83803AL as a direct substitute for the MN83803AK.
These integrated circuits are used in a number of different Panasonic camcorders: The MN83803AK is used in the PV-D705 and others. Schematics from these camcorders, contained in the camcorder service manuals, can shed light on the application of the integrated circuits. The PV-D705 manual, e.g., cost $6.00; price will vary by model. If you are curious about other camcorders using these I.C.'s, and manuals for them, ask the folks at Panasonic for cross-reference of which other camcorders (including palmcorders) use them.
NOTE: The Panasonic database has no information on the MCL0712A03; Its palmcorders use another LCD of apparently identical configuration, called the MCL0512B01. Not all of these camcorders use the MN83803 series chips to drive the electronic viewfinder (EVF) LCD; some use a more fully integrated ASIC that combines video processing (R-Y / B-Y /Y --> RGB conversion) with the timing functions the MN83803 series performs.
Sharp IR3y05y Video processing IC for electronic viewfinder LCDs.
When in doubt, look under your nose again.
Panasonic Services Company - SLDC has this part; prior inquiries had failed, and this successful inquiry almost did too. Knowing which camcorder had the part (PV-940, PV-950, PV-950-B, PV-950B-K, e.g.) helped (though I supplied this information the first time around, too); extreme, painstaking care pronouncing the part's alphanumeric designation (i.e. 'IR3y05y'), and communicating this to the phone person made the difference, though. Apparently this person thought I'd said 'yR3y05y' or something like this.
So: Don't be surprised if you are told at first that the part is unavailable. To get it, be persistent, polite, and savvy about phone communication. Also, be lucky, because sometimes, I guess, these previous aren't even enough.

J&J Surface ((831)-438-7600) has proven to be very useful in finding difficult-to-find chips. We've obtained the MN83803AK and IR3y05 through J&J Surface, at excellent prices. Since what they do takes a little work, it can take some time, but for obtaining these devices for good prices, when others could not, they earn high marks.
Their web form apparently does not work, so they must be contacted by telephone. They can be slow to return calls, so some patience and/or persistence may be required.

Marshall Electronics

Marshall reports that presently, demand for this part greatly exceeds supply, and therefore
there is a 22-week lead time to obtain the part from the factory, plus 'allocation time'. Marshall requires a minimum purchase of 80 units of this part. The latest price they quoted to me in mid-January, 1998, was $6.60 U.S. per piece, subject to change. Note that the minimum purchase quantity is not a mistake, not a confusion with Marshall's own $50 minimum purchase.
Halted Specialties Inc has misplaced its former stock of the plugs used to hook the LCD's FPC connector to a PC board.
Molex makes the connectors we need, according to Alan Tate, who provided the following URL: http://www.molex.com/product/ffc/52745.html
