Birds - February and March 2007

My cat Tommy, who died January 30, 2007, was a great hunter, but rarely went after birds. Perhaps the biggest surprise he had was when a female belted kingfisher hit the upstairs window and almost literally fell into his mouth as he lay sleeping below. When I heard her squawking, he already had her, and she was so limp I thought her neck was broken. But an hour of quiet in a cage under a towel revived her, and I let her go. She must have thought it was a terrible nightmare. Tommy must have thought it was a wonderful dream. Here's my page to Tommy, who died at age 14 of asthma, a disease I didn't even know he had until it was too late. He will be buried under the birdhouse hanging from the arbor (seen above). MARCH 14-----------------------------------------------

A whole contingent of new birds came in today - about sixty common grackles
and male red-wing blackbirds filled the trees and ground under the feeder,
making it sound
like a Florida swampland. With them came a pair of cowbirds (above), a
single song sparrow.

...three fox sparrows scritching the leaves where the snow had melted,
prompting a friend to ask what kind of bird was out there "dancing." Two
are having a disagreement above.

A male turkey visited, too, with his harem. The coloration of the feathers
seemed more beautiful than usual. Maybe it was because of the drab
landscape that they stood out.
All of these photos are taken through the windows of my house, so they aren't
always crisp and sharp. Some days I don't get much "real" work done
because there is so much
bird activity compelling me to grab my Nikon and the Sony video camera.
Two days later a mourning dove pretended to be an ornament on the frozen
birdbath.
