SNAIL KITES

Female Snail Kite (left) and Male on right. To far right, female
carries the apple snail that it feeds on. They're the size of, uh, small
apples.

The eyes and legs are quite red, and the very hooked bill is perfect for
excavating the soft snail from its shell. Female (middle) and male (right)
hunting.
WHOOPING CRANES
I've had a special spot in my heart for whooping cranes, ever since I became a birder at age 9. The Audubon Park Zoo in New Orleans, near where I lived, had Crip and Josephine, who escaped a fire that killed some monkeys.

Three of them were easily spotted feeding among the cattle. They have
colored leg bands for identification.
