About the Business
Art of a Woman, LLC is a small business located in a beautiful New England coastal town called Freeport, Maine. It is owned and operated by artist/founder Susan Hazzard. Art of a Woman specializes in hand painted silks, luscious silk velvets, unique feminine sculptural forms and custom design jewelry.

Artist Susan Hazzard takes advantage of New England’s change of seasons by painting outside in her gardens during the summer/fall months and then working inside with clay during the wintertime when the heat of a high fire gas kiln offers warm respite from the raging winds and freezing temperatures outside.

Each piece of work is individually hand created and incorporates different combinations of the elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Variations in color and style are inherent to the organic nature of the artist’s creative process and are a welcome celebrated outcome!

Art of a Woman has two major product lines. One is called the Classics line and the other is called the Goddess Line. A broad assortment of Art of a Woman unique creations is available in silk, silk velvet, custom design jewelry and high fire ceramic clay in both the Classics and the Goddess product lines. These products may be viewed in the Gallery.

About the Artist
Susan is an avid gardener and skier as well as a dedicated wife, mother and daughter.

She is a classical pianist currently studying with Carol Eaton Elowe, founding director of the Portland Conservatory of Music as well as with internationally renowned Russian pianist, Tamara Poddubnaya. As a child, Susan attended the New England Conservatory of Music and also studied with Ocy Downs of Portland, Maine. As an adult, it has been both an honor and a pleasure on various occasions to perform with the faculty of the Portland Conservatory of Music.

Over the years, Susan has worked as an art docent, served as Maine/New Hampshire chairwoman for La Leche League International and has supported her local community as a trustee of the Freeport Conservation Land Trust.

Susan has also held a seat on the board of directors for Freeport Economic Development Corporation (FEDC) as representative for the burgeoning Arts movement in Freeport and as liason between FEDC and the interests of small business enterprises in the southern Maine coastal area.

On the practical side, Susan holds a B.S. magna cum laude in Business Management and worked for a Fortune 500 company managing creative development teams for many years prior to having children.

Susan is also a certified group fitness instructor and teaches meditative body sculpting two mornings a week at the local fitness club. This is a major accomplishment that Susan is very proud of, given the brain injury that she sustained several years ago.

It was just after turning 40 that Susan underwent unexpected major brain, spine and skull surgery to correct a critical life threatening condition. Although left with a permanent partial disability, the trauma of the event and the challenge of the ensuing long recovery served to open and expand Susan’s artistic creative flow.

“Having lived so closely with death nearby, I am humbled by the beauty of just being alive. My creative process and resulting artwork are outward expressions of the joy and gratitude I feel for the simplest of things. Actually, Art of a Woman is the heart of me as a woman artist. It is from this deep primitive place that Art of a Woman was conceived of and born. Each piece of work that I create is a celebration of life.”

The Art of a Woman logo image is a silhouette of sculpture Susan created of her grandmother Doris who was a dancer in New York City during the 1920’s.
