The Center for Learning
Now there's a mouthful! The Center for Learning (CFL) is a joint collaboration between USM and the State Department of Health & Human Services-Offices of Adult Mental Health, Cognitive and Physical Disabilities (MR) and Children's Behavioral Health. I am a "Project Assistant" (i.e. Jack-of-all-Trades) within CFL. I provide administrative support for the state's Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician (MHRT) program along with conference logistics, maintaining the project's various databases, website, and a little bit of everything else including courier duty.
Wait?! I'm a weatherman working in the field of mental health. What gives you ask?
<BEGIN RANT>POLITICS. As I completed my master degree, politicians
slashed the National Weather Service's budget nearly in half (as part of Contract on America in
the mid-90's). NWS let go of many skilled meteorologists who took up all the private sector
jobs. The weather field has yet to fully recover from this blow and folks like me who now have
been out of the field 10+ years have little hope of getting into it. To this day entry level weather-
related jobs that pay BELOW what I make working at USM require a minimum of two years
experience. HELLO!! How the [PIG-13] am I suppose to gain experience if no one will hire me.
And what kind of oxymoron is this? If its an entry level position, how can you demand that
someone already have two years experience for the position?!?</END RANT>
My resume is available upon request.
You can contact me through my scout patch page, but you had best remember your Morse Code!
Hobbies and Interests
Creative writing. I have been published (sort of) twice! A short story titled
The Spirit of the Wilderness
and a short essay titled Junk Mail.
Writer on the alt.devilbunnies Usenet Newsgroup. See my web page on devilbunnies for details about my characters.
Active member of the Boy Scouts of America. I earned my Eagle Scout in 1988 and am the Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner (District "SPL"), email newletter editor and co-webmaster for Kennebec Valley District, Pine Tree Council. An avid Scout patch/badge collector, concentrating on 'junk patches'--patches from scouting events such as camporees, especially those with wildlife or cartoon characters on them, I may be able to arrange a trade with you. Other collectors out on the net may want to check-out the patches I have for trading and my want list of patches. However due to current spam-harvest bots, you will not find my email address easily on the trading pages. I hope you're good at Morse Code!
I enjoy hiking, camping, bicycle touring, and cross-country skiing. I have pursued my hobbies extensively in both Maine and New Hampshire. I have also done some hiking in Virginia, southwestern Texas, and the Four Corners Area.
