SCREE! SCREE! SCREE!

How wonderful, to be awaken by a local red squirrel at 4:30am! Well, we didn't waste much time packing up the tents and heading another 40 miles and an hour southeast to West Quoddy Head, the most eastern point in the country...

Yes, that small dot at the base of the lighthouse is Buzzy

Now wait a minute, you say! WEST QUODDY HEAD??? Why is the most eastern point in the United States called West?! Well, East Quoddy Head is on the other side of Passamaquoddy Bay in New Brunswick. Our most eastern point happens to be the western shore of this bay. It was a bit foggy, so Buzzy bought a postcard later in the day as you can see below.

From there, we drove 40 miles west to Machias for the annual Blueberry Festival. Being deep in devilbunny territory, Buzzy hid in my backpack for most of the festival. He did venture out twice, once to mail his postcard so he could get the special cancellation and once to get his photo taken in front of Burnham Tavern.

Burnham Tavern is the oldest building still standing in Down East Maine. Built in 1770, it served as a social meeting house (and tavern) up until the early 1900's. It was here in 1775 that colonists planned out the first naval battle of the American Revolution. Fought off Machias, the Colonists were victorious, capturing the British warship, Margarita. The Margarita's image appears on many businesses throughout town.

After the festival, I purchased blueberries in nearby Addison and made the marathon 3 hour trip back home to get them out of the heat. Buzzy was of little help to me. As soon as we got home, he pitched his tent in my parents' kitchen and went to sleep.

He left a note on the tent that read: "Do Note Disterb, Moksie Wor Me Owt!" I suspect he ate a few too many blueberries from the looks of the contents of the open box next to the tent. He was later discovered there by my parents and aunt. The aunt almost adopted him on the spot.
