SOUTH WIND INFLUENCE

Since Maine is a coastal state, the ocean can effect the weather.

Here in the Lakes Region, the sea breeze invades

the eastern areas rather easy.

Further northwest however:, a south wind is warmed by a warmer land breeze.

This is all to do with the shape of the coastline .

The coastline cuts very close to Lewiston.

So, the cold seabreeze would travel over

land of 19 miles. This does modify the air.

However, when the south wind blows in western

Maine, the wind is blown over a longer area of land.

This is true in towns like Sebago,Hiram,Fryeburg.

The warmer wind in the spring time is from some

53 miles of land. This is why Sebago gets a higher

temperature in the spring than Lewiston.

The place that does not get any land breeze in a

south wind : is Portland.

They would have the coolest temp.

Below are a few dates showing the south wind:

MAY 21,1994

Sebago Hi= 80 Lewiston hi =74 Portland hi=65

May 31,1994

Sebago Hi=91 Lewiston hi=84 Portland Hi=78

May 21,1995

May 1st,1997

Fryeburg hi=69 Sebago hi=69 Lewiston hi=60 Portland hi=58

The south wind happens in the winter also.

Sometimes the warmer ocean wind invades Lewiston

and changes the snow to rain. While, western Maine:

It remains snow. There was a storm a couple of

winters ago, when, the noontime temperature in Fryeburg

was 16 deg. with heavy snow. It was 17 deg. in Sebago

with heavy snow. While:

Lewiston was 29 deg. with sleet & freezing rain.

While Portland was 44 deg. with rain.!

Weather is so amazing!
