Odyssey
Travel Magazine
To demonstrate your knowledge of The Odyssey,
you will create a travel magazine. In this epic, Odysseus and his
men visit strange new lands. Would you want to visit these places on the
basis of Homer’s descriptions? Imagine that you are a tour company advertising
agent, attempting to entice vacationers to pay big bucks to go on your
tour. Design and publish a travel magazine that describes at least five
of the places that Odysseus has visited so far in the The Odyssey.
Bring
these places—and the beings that inhabit them—to life for your readers;
make your publication so interesting that your tours are sold out! Remember
that you must include aspects of the sites that directly link to
the descriptions in The Odyssey (for instance, you could
have a Scylla and Charybdis water park with scary rides and a humongous
water slide). You will include five visuals to accompany your article;
these may include a map, scenic "photo," advertisement, or other graphic.
Keep in mind the overall tone and graphic design of a "real" magazine.
Procedure:
-
Skim travel magazines to see how articles and
graphics are organized, and then make an outline of your magazine.
-
Take notes on the information you want to include
in your article. Focus on the details of the setting, as well as on the
physical challenges that travelers would face if they were to visit these
places. You’ll want to include details telling the who, what, where,
when, and why of the action. Include "Tips for Travelers," where to eat,
local customs, etc. Also, consider what kinds of details you’ll need to
invent to bring the setting and action alive for readers.
-
At the minimum, your article must include
a "catchy" opening paragraph that introduces your tour company, at least
five paragraphs (or separate articles) that describe each stopping point,
and a concluding paragraph that states the specific details of the trip
(cost, travel arangements, etc.). You must include five accompanying pictures
or visuals.
-
Write a draft of your travel magazine. Make
up a title for your magazine that will capture the attention of your readers.
Design the graphic layout, keeping in mind that we will be going to the
computer lab to type this article. You may also cut out pictures
from magazines.
-
Type and revise your article. Edit your work
and correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as needed.
