Cool Software
Check out some of the better freeware and shareware applications I've discovered (and now use). These are mainly Windows apps, though a few are cross-platform.
- EditPlus
- The editor used to write this page! A good, inexpensive text editor for Windows with tabs, an HTML toolbar, FTP support, and more. Many thanks go out to Mike Goodrum for recommending this to me.
Mail Warrior
- A nifty little POP email program. Not perfect, but pure joy if you've been using something ELSE (*cough* Outlook Express).
Mozilla
- Okay, so this doesn't really fit the theme of small apps, and it's still in the "getting there" phase. But it's a legit alternate to Internet Explorer, it's free, open source, and it's got a lot of nifty features. It's a bit sluggish on older machines (at least right now) but it's worth a look.
Book Organizer
- A pretty good tool for organizing your books. It's actually a lot more powerful than a lot of commercial apps I've seen advertised. There's also a movie organizer, but I haven't tried that out yet.
WS FTP LE
- Barebones, just the facts ma'am FTP program. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done. I actually do most of my FTPing from inside EditPlus, believe it or not.
Abiword
- This is a word processor that Liz decided to try out. I haven't toyed with it much (I find word processors icky) but it seems worth a look, especially since it's free.
Irfanview
- Another nice little app... this one is an image viewer editor that can acquire from scanners and other sources. I have a couple of these applications, and I think this one has given me the least grief. That and it's free.
