Entry: "Giant's House"

One of the first novels I read when I started working at the bookstore was The Giant's House by Elizabeth McCracken. I was slow to get back into reading for pleasure after St. John's and this was one of the first books that really captured my imagination... reminding me what novels could be like. It's utterly charming... well written, somewhat outrageous in plot, but classic in tone (The main character sounds exactly like a spinster librarian in New England should) and the cover of the hardcover (I was lucky enough to snag the remainder) marked the beginning of my stubborn and strange love of the color orange.

I was reminded of it because there's a bit about large people on Snarkout right now that includes this link about a man who must have influenced McCracken's depiction of her giant. Many of the details are the same... and I feel like I just read the novel all over again. Restoring the romantic perspective on my choice of occupation. Which is good... it'll be easier to get to work today. ;)

Also in the snarkout piece is a link to a "somehow meaningful" article on Shaquille O'Neale... which is entertaining at least... definitely worth checking out.
