Entry: "Inkheart, Alex & Emma"

I finished Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. A book lover's book... the main character is the child of a bookbinder, the story is about characters popping out of stories, and the children's lit references are plenty. It's vivid and warm with a classic flavor and slow moving pace. I liked it very much. It is a fantasy story with creatures from other worlds (or rather other stories) getting trapped in our present day world. But compared to Harry, it was very subtle and quiet in a Secret Garden-ish sort of way. I liked Meggie very much. Now I'll have to read The Thief Lord.

Also today on my day off :) I saw Alex and Emma. There were some wonderful moments for anyone who has yelled out loud at a character in a novel for doing something stupid... Emma has some great lines. But on the whole it didn't really come together. The writers really botched some important moments, the voice-over during the story-within-a-story scenes was really obnoxious (A more Princess Bride approach would have worked better... some voice over, but not all the time!) and it just felt unbelievable. And I prefer Owen to Luke.

I did enjoy it... I liked the discussion of fictional character developement, and I was really happy to get out of the heat and relax on my day off. I'm just glad I went without Andrew. He would have suffered. ;)
