I live in the woods that border the shore of Robinhood Cove, on Georgetown Island. The fluctuation of the tide, direction of the wind, time of day, amount of light filtering through the sky, and changes in the seasons are determinants in the way a place looks, and provide infinite moments of beauty. I paint on-site, and I am grateful for sublime moments in nature. Painting from nature requires organizing the visual surface to create order from chaos, and to capture the dynamics of moving water and the effects of light and atmospheric conditions. It is the attempt to capture the essence of place in time. The impetus for my work is the seduction of the motif. Rather than merely recording exactly what I see, the motif is a visual and emotional departure point. This approach allows me to use direct observation, memory, and intellect to create a visual world that is a representation of the outside world and my inner world. In my work, I begin with an attempt to capture the likeness of an individual, place or object, but try not to subjugate the medium to the likeness. If the motif overtakes the seduction, a painting becomes merely descriptive, and conversely, the medium may obstruct the articulation of the seduction of the motif.I strive to achieve a balance between the seduction and the articulation of the motif, and in that process, discern underlying truths in the motif. The motif is only a material stimulus. It is the seduction which determines the choice of motif, and corresponds exactly to the final painting. If this seduction, this initial conception vanishes, all that remains is the motif, which invades the painter. -Bonnard
