Your Grandmother:  A Memoir of Mattie Coolidge Crawford
Privately printed by Fred C. Crawford, 1945 (191 pages)

In the preface of this book Fred Crawford explains that these books were written at the request of his children and grandchildren and were done as a "labor of love". "It is the memoir of a home-loving wife and mother who found time to do many things in a work which she conceived to be for the good of others less fortunate than herself and in the doing of which she found great happiness."

Mattie Collidge Crawford was a daughter of John and Martha Sturtevant Coolidge of Watertown, MA. Mattie was an artist and among the first women to graduate from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. This book contains many great family stories, including what it was like being a son-in-law to Martha Sturtevant Coolidge. Also in this book are seven gorgeous watercolor paintings done by Mattie.

One Branch of the Coolidge Family  1427-1963
by Calvin D. Coolidge - privately printed in 1964, (83 pages)

Other Families :
BALDO,  BESSE,  BLOCH,  BOND,  BURGESS,  BUSH,  CHILD,  COLLYNGE,  CRAWFORD,  DAVENPORT,  DAVIDSON,  ERVING,  HALL,  HOLLAND,  JANSEN,  LANSING,  LOMBARD,  LOW,  MILLHOUSE,  MURDOCK,  NORCROSS,  ROSENFELD,  RUGG,  SANDERSON,  STARK,  STRATTON,  STURTEVANT,  THOMAS,  WARREN,  WEBBER,  WINSLOW,  WOOD

This book should be of great interest to all Maine Sturtevants who originated in Wareham, MA as it contains the Lot Sturtevant of Oakland, ME genealogy and therefore includes his brothers, Abisha (Wayne, ME), Andrew (Fayette, ME)  Joseph (Paris, ME) and Jonathan (Bowdoinham, ME). Lot Sturtevant's wife was Elizabeth Besse who had an ancestral line to Richard Warren of the Mayflower. Lot's granddaughter, Martha Jane Sturtevant, married John Coolidge of Watertown, MA and her descendant, Fred C. Crawford, published this four book series.

Aside from several genealogies in this book, there are gravestone photos, a painting of Lot Sturtevant, (1759-1849) and a painting of his house, still standing today (2011) on Ten Lots Road in Oakland.  This book is indexed by surname only.

My First Day and My Last Day with Grandma Coolidge
by Grace Davenport Winslow -  privately printed in 1967 (54 pages)

This rare book is full of family stories by Martha Sturtevant Coolidge's oldest grandchild, Grace Davenport, who spent a lot of time with her grandparents as a young child. As Grace was blessed with a vivid memory and great narrative skills, her relatives felt that her stories were not to be forgotten. A multitude of terrific family photos are bound in this book, which depicts a time long ago. It has a beautiful colored photo of the Lot Sturtevant Homestead in Oakland, ME painted in watercolor by Mattie Coolidge Crawford in 1900. This house is still (2011) standing on the Ten Lots Road. Mattie relates stories of going to the nearby Mount Auburn Cemetery (Cambridge, MA) with her brother, John, to play in the frog ponds there. A story located at the end of the book, "Memories of My Childhood", is a special treat. It was written in 1896 and read before the Pine Tree Club of Watertown, MA. In it, Martha Sturtevant Coolidge tells of her life growing up on the Ten Lots Road in West Waterville, ME (now Oakland). Oh, How times have changed!

The Life and Times of Oramel Crawford: A Vermont Farmer 1807-1888
Privately printed by Fred C. Crawford in 1952 (263 pages)

This book is a biography of Oramel Crawford.  It is the story of the life of a Vermont farmer up in the "Kingdom" in Guildhall, Vermont, in the 1800s. The Crawfords settled in northern Vermont shortly after the Revolutionary War.  The book's introduction relates his Crawford Genealogy as stemming from Ulster, Ireland, to Boston, in 1726.
Chapter # 3, The Homestead, speaks of: The Farm - The Home - The Art of Living - Shelter - Fuel - Food - Local Markets - Transportation - Farming Tools - Clothing - Farming as a Business - Farm Work - Sickness - Spring Water - Good Housekeepers - Vermin - Chores - Lamps and Lighting --Cooper - Thanksgiving - Hog Killing - Sausage Making - Newly Born Animals - Snow Storms - Geese - Spruce Gum - Crawford's Pot - Logging - the Church - Personal Freedom. A very interesting read for those who have a yen for the feel of the times of those who came before us.
