Guillaume (William in English) Chenard, born circa 1720 in Darnets, France, died 1765 in PQ, son of Michel Chenal or Chanal and Marguerite Brette of the village of Darnets, department of Corrèze, ancient province of Limousin, married at Beauport on 31 January 1752 to Marie-Anne Parent, born 1731 in PQ, died in PQ, the daughter of FrançoisParent and Marguerite-Catherine Binet. Guillaume Chenal (then later Chenard) sailed to Quebec city from Bordeaux, France on 22 April 1749 on the ship, "le Dauphin". The village of Darnets is located 19 miles ENE of the city of Tulle. The family lived in the hamlet called la Bardesche. Michel's second wife was from the village of Saugeras, in the commune of Ambrugeat, both of which are located a few miles north of Darnets. Michel Chanal died at his home in la Bardesche on February 2, 1734.

NOTES: In France, this surname was also spelled Chenart. In French-speaking Canada, some add a French
accent over the letter e as Chénard. This is incorrect. In France, I have never seen the name written as
such. There are still numerous Chenards in France, even in the Limoges area where I met a nice gentleman
by that name who worked as superintendant of the water department for that city. During World War One
there was a perfume by that name sold in Paris. Also, in the early 1900's, a French auto engineer by the
name Ernest Chenard (born 1861 in Nanterre - died 1922 Chamalières) with a partner by the name of Walcker (pronounced "Valcare") built automobiles, the first one appearing in Paris in 1901. By 1912 there were five different types of Chenards and in the 1920's they acquired a more sporty image. Their cars won the famous Le Mans race three times. By 1951 the
Peugeot company absorbed Chenard-Walcker. In 1977, while visiting Austin, Texas,  I went into an exclusive clothing store named Chenards.The store manager told me it was one in a chain of several in Texas and that the owner was not himself a Chenard; that he came across the name in his travels, liked it, thought it sounded classy and adopted it for his stores. For those who are not familiar with this name, it is pronounced "shanard" in English and "shanow" in French.

NOTES: En France, ce nom de famille était aussi écrit Chenart. Au Canada français, certain ajoute un accent sur le e comme Chénard. Ceci est inexact. En France, je n'ai jamais vu le nom écrit comme cela. Il y a encore plusieurs Chenard en France, même dans le secteur de Limoges où j'ai rencontré un gentil monsieur portant ce nom, qui travaillait comme surveillant au service des eaux pour la ville. En 1951, la compagnie Peugeot a repris les affaires de Chenard-Walker.
En 1977, losque que je visitait Austin, Texas, je suis entré dans un magasin de vêtements exclusifs portant le nom Chenards. Le gérant du commerce m'a informé que ce n'était qu'un magasin parmi plusieurs appartenant à une chaine au Texas et que le propriétaire n'est pas, lui-même, un Chenard; qu'il a remarqué le nom en voyageant, l'a aimé, trouvait qu'il avait une consonance "bon genre" et l'a adopté pour ses magasins. Pour ceux qui ne sont pas familié avec ce nom, nous devons le prononcer "shenard" en anglais et "shenar" en français.
