NOTE: The name of the "Head of Family" was the only name listed in this census. All other persons were listed quantitatively by sex and age group according to the above table.

François COUILLARD (listed above) may not be of French-Canadian extraction. There were several Couillard families living in the Bangor area in the mid-1800s who may have been French, French-Canadian, or French Huguenot.
There are no identifyable French-Canadian families in any pre-1840 censuses of Waterville; however, it is very likely that there were several such families as well as a small number of unaccompanied or single men who were working and living (temporarily at least) in the Waterville area. Considered only as transients by the census-takers, they were not listed in the 1830 or earlier censuses.

The following are believed to have been living in Waterville in 1840 but may have been missed by the census-taker or were simply considered as transients. This would add about 35 to 40 more French-Canadians to the above figures.

Michel BOUCHER & Marcelline Thibodeau
Jean LALIBERTÉ & Modeste Veilleux
Joseph MORIN & Rose Veilleux
Raphaël ROY & Angèle Bolduc

The next three families were listed on the 1840 census of Winslow:

George LACOMBE & Adélaïde Thibodeau
Gaspard THIBODEAU & Angèle Bariault
Stanislas THIBODEAU & Basilisse Veilleux

*Sophie died 5 May 1904 in Waterville.
NOTE 1: married as M.-Louise Gagné - no doubt she was an adopted child.
Records of St.François de Beauce have five (5) different André Lacombe families.
There is no doubt that all five are the same couple - that there is only one André Lacombe and his wife

who uses different names which strongly indicates that she was an adopted child.

This couple is listed as follows in the parish records of St.Francois de Beauce:

(1)André Lacombe & M.-Louise Gagné: child Frédéric b. 10-3-1810
(2)André Lacombe & Josephte _____ : children François-Geo. 1811, Edouard 1826, Cyrille b. 1834
(3)André Lacombe & Josette Roy: child Adélaide b. 6-4-1815
(4)André Lacombe & Josette Quirion: children Joseph b. 12-5-1817, Sophie b. 1819, François. b. 1822-d. 1825,
Féréol b. 14-1-1824, Zoé b. 21-8-1829, Charles b. 1832
(5)André Lacombe & Josette Gagné: Luce d. 1814
This family was evidently in Skowhegan about 1836-8 and in Waterville afterwards.

This family was in Skowhegan in the mid-1830's and was in Waterville for the 1840 census.
They returned to St.François later that year and eventually came back to Waterville in the mid-1840's.

Jean-Baptiste Mathieu didn't bring his wife and younger unmarried members of his family to Waterville
until about 1832 as evidenced by their daughter, Sara, who died in December 1831 in St.François and daughter,
Marie, who was born in Waterville in April 1833. They have long been historically regarded as the first
French-Canadian family to permanently settle in Waterville.

to Waterville around the same time.
