Children fishing below remnants of Union Gas Dam, Messalonskee Stream,
Waterville, Maine. June 12, 2005.
Today, for the first time in 160 years, the children of Waterville
can catch native striped bass migrating up the Kennebec River into Messalonskee
Stream.
Today, the waters of Messalonskee Stream are clean enough for the children
of Waterville to play in on a hot Sunday afternoon.
For the first time
in a century, the people of Waterville do not have to warn their children
to never go near the stream rushing through their neighborhood.
