Gravel Bar Islands and Shoals, Kennebec River, Sidney, Maine. August,
1999.
A mile below Six Mile Falls, the Kennebec River grows wide and shallow and
flows through a complex and shifting mosaic of gravel bar islands and shoals.
Depths range from a few inches to over 10 feet deep in the channel on the
east side of the river. The current here is deceptively strong. The substrate
is sand, peastone and cobble -- ideal spawning and nursery habitat for Atlantic
salmon. The width of the river here can be judged by the size of the canoe
in the left background of the photo.
