Note: All beaver dams observed on main-stem of Togus Stream in 1997 were
opened in mid-October to allow for passage of adult Atlantic salmon. Two
large debris dams were also cleared. In many cases, however, the beavers
re-built the dams 24-48 hours after they were opened. A heavy rainstorm
on Nov. 1, 1997 blew out many of the dams and raised water levels high enough
for them to be passable.
In October of 1998, the lowermost three miles of the stream was inspected
for beaver dams and many were found in the same locations as those observed
in 1997. Because of higher stream flows and small height of dams observed
in October, 1998, no efforts were made to open the dams because it was presumed
that fish could pass them.
