Richard Thompson
Original Soundtrack From The Movie/Sweet Talker
Capitol

Hot on the heels of his Grammy nominated album, Rumour And Sigh , Thompson returns with a first, (for him), a movie soundtrack. It contains much of what you may have come to expect from this fine artist. The usual wonderfully biting or sad tunes combined with his superb instrumental work. Some of which, as in "Persuasion" , recalls the same style of fluid fretwork established by Mark Knopfler and is somewhat of a departure for Thompson. Otherwise his instrumental pieces revel in the nuances of Irish and Scottish folk that became a trademark through the years. Three of the eleven songs, "Put Your Trust in me," "To Hand A Dream," "On and False Or True," feature him on vocals and are typical of the well established manner that we've come to know and love. A fourth tune finds Texan, John Andrew Parks handling the lead vocal chores. The rest are instrumental, "incidental, " pieces that differ in flavor and texture from one to the next. I'm quite anxious to see the movie, which is set in Australia, but I'm sure to have to look long and hard to find it as it's hardly a mainstream flick. Until Richard releases a follow-up to Rumour And Sigh we'll have to be satisfied with this one and believe me, that shouldn't be too hard. (SC)
