There's a problem with this set. There's some great stuff scattered over four discs, but the rest of it is no more than glitzy dreck. Y'know the stuff that should've never been recorded in the first place. (How most of this crap gets nominated for a Grammy always amazes me.) It's unfortunate to have to buy four disks to get enough music to make one really killer album but, that's the music business for you. Before I start to foam at the mouth while going on about that nauseating subject, I'll return to the matter at hand. Obviously these recordings vary in quality and substance. (They were recorded during the actual telecasts.) My favorite cut so far is on Volume II. Aerosmith's 1991 kick-ass performance of "Come Together" with Steven Tyler's shouted intro, "John, this is for you!" Other highlights on Volume II are: k. d. Lang's, "Constant Craving" and Eric Clapton's mournful, "Tears In Heaven" (both '93). The three remaining volumes are a virtual grab-bag of popular music and there are some stunning live versions of a handful of great tunes. Pick a disc with the least dreck for dollar ratio and go for it. (BB) © 2000 Dr. Rock'n'Roll
