Elliott Smith
August 6, 1969 - October 21, 2003
Elliott has become known by his hip following as a
prolific songwriter of austere, poetic and ethereal folk-pop
gems. Paper magazine called him "the number one troubadour
to watch n 1997." An indie purist since his days with the
Portland band Heatmiser, Elliott has used his whispery voice
to reveal the intimate and grimy details of street bohemia since
launching his solo career with 1994's Roman Candle, recorded
on a four-track in a basement. Elliott Smith was next (in 1995
for the Kill Rock Stars label), then the amazing new Either/Or
(1997, Kill Rock Stars). Now based in Brooklyn, Smith refuses
to believe critics who've declared his music as the Next Big
Thing. "I'm not sure my songs would make good singles,"
he says in that quiet voice. "Aren't you supposed to have
drums and stuff?"
