"Many Happy Returns"
The 2005 Programs of the Old Berwick Historical Society

UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE, ADMISSION IS FREE

     The Old Berwick Historical Society of South Berwick, Maine, invites you to join us for our 2005 series, featuring old favorites and new topics too. Admission is free at most events. Please note that our lectures will be held at Berwick Academy; enter on the Fogg Memorial driveway and use the parking lot at the top of the hill.

January 27 - 7:30 pm (Berwick Academy)
"WENTWORTH BY THE SEA: The Life and Times of a Grand Hotel" -- With photographs from his acclaimed new book, J. Dennis Robinson, owner and editor of SeacoastNH.com, traces 130 years of the hotel that was once listed among the nation's most endangered historic properties.

February 24 - 7:30 pm (Berwick Academy) - "WOODEN SHIPBUILDING, PAST AND PRESENT - A Heritage of the Piscataqua Region" -- From colonial mast trade to the clipper era and on into our own time, UNH Marine Docent Nathan Hazen explores the shipyards of our estuary, including those of South Berwick.

March 24 - 7:30 pm (Berwick Academy) - "DIGGING COLONIAL HOUSE:The Archaeology and History Behind the PBS TV Series" - Chadbourne archaeology dig director Tad Baker describes his stint as consultant for the recent PBS series, and reviews our 2004 season at the Chadbourne site.

April 28 - 7:30 pm (Berwick Academy) - "REVISITING PORTLAND STREET" -- Wendy Pirsig and Mary Vaughn return with maps and photos to trace over 200 years along one of southern Maine's most traveled byways.

May 19 - 6:30 pm (Counting House) - OBHS ANNUAL MEETING - We'll hold the drawing for our gundalow painting raffle, as the Capt. Adams returns to South Berwick. All Old Berwick Historical Society members are invited. New members are always welcome.

July 17 - 1:00 pm (rain date July 24) (Portland Street) Gather at the Soldier¹s Monument for a WALKING TOUR OF PORTLAND STREET CEMETERY. Join guide Mary Vaughn for a tour of this historic cemetery and humorous, tragic and inspiring stories of its residents. Approx. 1 hour.

August dates to be announced ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG - Tad Baker leads our eleventh season of exploration of Humphrey and Lucy Chadbourne's 1600s house site in South Berwick. Work at the site or in the artifact lab at the Counting House. OBHS membership requested. Information (207)748-0074.

September 22 - 7:30 pm (Berwick Academy) - "THE LIGHTING UP" -- Brenda Whitmore, writer and producer of the historical documentary ³The Lighting Up,² will present the documentary of the Dover, NH, mill women¹s strike that changed history.

October 27 - 7:30 pm (Berwick Academy)- "KINGFIELD COPPERHEADS² -- Local historian Paul Colburn relates the little known story of draft resistance in Maine during the Civil War.

November 12 (Spring Hill Lodge) THE LIGHTING UP BALL -- Our annual fundraiser, back by popular demand. Help us reignite an Old Berwick Historical Society tradition!

November 17 - 7:30 pm (Berwick Academy) - "SOUTH BERWICK - A RECREATIONAL HISTORY" - Retired educator Ernie Wood explores recreational opportunities of the past: The Palace, Porter Pines, Quamphegan Park, the rollerskating
rink and other hot spots. Come and add to the stories if you can!
