Sonny
Bono |
After the cancellation of Peter's Angels, Sonny Bono was extremely upset. Not only had he lost his role as the Angels sidekick, Rocky Munroe, but he also lost his job as licensing manager of Peter's Angels merchandising. One day while banging his head against a wall, Sonny came up with what he thought was a brilliant plan, but was in actuality:
a ridiculous attempt to cash in on a failed concept for a tv show,
a dubious plan to acquire untold fame and riches,
and at best a way to get sued, ridiculed, and forever lumped into a category with such failures as Pink Lady and Jeff, MacLean Stevenson sitcoms, and William Shatner's The Transformed Man album.
As Sonny always believed that his character failed to become a beloved part of the cast on Peter's Angels due to the fact that Erin Spelling (Aaron Spelling's little sister) would not allow him to paint his face when he appeared on camera, he decided he could now put his brilliant plan into action. He would paint his face like Peter Criss, and front a band which he would call Rocky Munroe's Peter's Angels. The band would also paint their faces like Peter Criss. They would be comprised of three people who would, in Sonny's mind, appear to be Peter's Angels being fronted by Rocky Munroe.
Sonny believed that everyone would be so enraptured by his performance that they would not notice that it was not the real Peter's Angels. He was able to book some gigs, and make his way onto a few tv variety shows which were desperate for guests. He scored his most incredible coup when he managed to book a guest slot on Love Boat, an Aaron Spelling production. Sonny was able to get on the show by telling the casting director that he was representing Peter's Angels, who had been on a show produced by Aaron's sister, Erin. The casting director, wary that Sonny may still have some residual effects from the radioactive seeds and thus be violent, booked the band to appear on the Love Boat.
When Sonny arrived with the pseudo band, he was fortunate that
the crew and guests for that weeks particular episode were not people who would
normally enjoy the garage/punk music of Peter's Angels. Thus no one in
the cast or crew knew that Sonny had not brought the actual band with him. When Sonny jumped out on
stage wearing a sequined jumpsuit, hippy hat, wig
and makeup, the entire audience screamed in horror. Sonny screamed
,
writhed on the ground, smashed a guitar, and sang a song called Smash It, which was obviously
not a Peter's Angels song.
With the crowd frozen in pure terror, Sonny finished the first song and started doing a comedy routine straight out of the Sonny and Cher Variety Hour. It was only when he paused to await a response from Cher that he remembered where he actually was. At this point, things got ugly as Sonny continued the comedy routine, doing not only his own part, but also mimicking Cher's part in a high pitched voice.
The producer, realizing that this was not the real Peter's Angels, had already called security to remove Sonny from the set. Upon seeing Sonny's visage of sequins, face paint and hippy hat, security assumed him to be an escaped mental patient, brutally stuffed him into a straight jacket, and shipped him off to their nearest contracted sanitarium, which coincidentally enough was in Guam.
The staff at the sanitarium were thrilled to have Sonny in their care since they knew him as tv character, Rocky Munroe. Polls done during Peter's Angels peak of popularity showed that although most viewers wanted to hit Rocky Munroe repeatedly in the head with a brick, the character was extremely popular in jails and sanitariums. Sonny found that he had a captive audience, both literally and figuratively, for his creative posturing. He enjoyed a sold out six week run at the sanitarium's cafeteria talent show, and met several people who believed they had appeared on the tv show. As Sonny had been in a radioactive seed dementia for much of his time on the show, he never realized his new friends were clearly insane.
After a few months the staff realized that Sonny was not insane, and as they had not been paid for the time he had already spent there, they let him go free.
