Within
minutes of Whitney's Wilderness Cabins
is Reid State
Park, a pristine example of the rocky coast
of Maine and sandy beaches, dunes with natural grasses and roses bushes,
well marked trails for hiking, bath houses with fresh water showers, grills
and fireplaces. There are saltwater ponds and shallow inlets for young
swimmers and tidal pools to explore for marine life.
Another of Maine's beautiful state parks is Popham Beach. Mentioned in the historical references of this page, Fort Popham has stood watch at the entrance to the Kennebec River since Civil War times.
Woolwich and Whitney's Wilderness Cabins are within forty-five minutes of beautiful Camden, Maine which is home to many tall ships from the turn of the century. Also nearby are a few of Maine's more than seventy lighthouses. There are Seguin Light off Popham Beach, Dublin Lighthouse in Arrowsic, Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Pemaquid Light which boasts of majestics rock cliffs overlooking the open ocean.
