Across the bridge in Bath you will find Bath Iron Works, a shipyard with over 100 years of ship building history along the Kennebec River.

Just to the south of the shipyard, the Maine Maritime Museum captures the imagination with a wonderful selection of artifacts and an atmosphere that brings back the sounds, the aromas  and the craftsmenship of nineteenth century shipbuilding.

And if it's history you love, you'll find Fort Popham - a Civil War fort standing guard at the mouth of the Kennebec River where it meets Casco Bay. Popham Colony, settled in the early 1600's was the first settlement in Maine.

Joshua Chamberlain's home and Civil War museum are located in nearby Brunswick near Bowdoin College where Chamberlain taught.  While at Bowdoin College visit the Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum.

As for local historical societies, they may be found in Woolwich, Edgecomb, Pejepscot, Phippsburg, Lincoln County and many other towns in the mid coast area.
