M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, is considered to be a close galaxy at 15 million light years distance. The smaller galaxy, NGC 5195, interacts tidally every once in a great while with the larger galaxy. The Whirlpool Galaxy is considered to be the finest example of a face-on spiral galaxy, and is a stunning sight in large Dobsonian telescopes, and appears as a fuzzy patch in small telescopes.
