Certified Governmental Financial Manager

Certified Governmental Financial Manager (CGFM)

If you have earned a college degree (bachelor’s or higher) with 24 hours of courses in financial management topics, apply for the CGFM Program now! If not, you may obtain a waiver.

To apply for the CGFM Program:

  1. Submit a CGFM Application form, including a nonrefundable application fee of $85. Note: by submitting an application for the CGFM Program, you certify that you have read and will abide by the AGA Code of Ethics. You can find a copy on the website.
  2. Fax or mail proof of your college degree – see Education requirement below. This information is required at the time of application.
  3. Fax or mail a CGFM Work Verification Form. This form does not have to be submitted at the time of application, but is required before the CGFM can be awarded.

What happens after you apply?

Once your CGFM application and degree information are received and processed, the Office of Professional Certification will mail you an eligibility letter with instructions on how to purchase your examinations. Overview of CGFM Process describes your pathway to earning the CGFM certification.

 

Education Requirement

In order to take part in the Certified Government Financial Manager examinations, you must have already earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, and have completed at least 24 credit hours of study composed of courses in:

  • Accounting
  • Auditing
  • Budgeting
  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Electronic Data Processing
  • Information Resources Management
  • Public Administration
  • Other Financial Management Topics

As part of your application for the CGFM Program, please submit a copy of your transcript from an accredited college or university. The transcript must show that a degree (bachelor's or higher) was awarded and must list at least 24 credit hours of courses in financial management topics. Your name and the name of the college or university must appear on all transcripts. Please note: CPA card or license is not acceptable as proof of degree.
