Never...Never...Never...Buy a Maxtor hard Drive !!!
But first...A little History:
Long, Long, Looooooooooooooooong ago in a previous age...Western Digital Drives owned the Universe - they were EVERYWHERE: IBM Main-frames, schools, businesses, government, you name it. Everyone prayed to the WD god. But then something happened...They WD Drives started to fail at an alarming rate everywhere I worked (it would be worth knowing that I was Programming IBM Main-frames starting in 1965 and still own a small Computer Store - PRIVATE CLIENTELE ONLY!).
It came to the point that we had NO faith in WD had nowhere else to turn to. THEN...Maxtor came along with wonderful Hard-drives that worked, had a lower than WD failure rate and had a 3-year warranty - we thought we had gone to Nirvana and this went on for years with everyone in the Country pushing Maxtor Drives. BUT...When the Maxtor drives started failing at an increasing rate (as had been the history of WD) we started to worry again but they were simply replaced under the 3-year warranty by Maxtor.
Then...Lo-and-behold 2 years ago, Maxtor came out with what They called their new generation of Super-drives. Sounded great until we found out that the great 3-year warranty went straight down to Hell with ONLY a 1-year warranty. But the Rhetoric about the New-drives sounded good so we bought them.
NOW...
We are having the similar failure rates with Maxtor that we had with IBM Drives: My shop is having a Maxtor 75% failure rate (of course OUT of the now 1-year warranty) A technician I know with 20 years in Navy-computers; 7-years as a Staples Tech.; and now on his own is having a 30% failure rate with Maxtor - Here we go again: Grab the market with a good product and later on make what we have found to be an inferior product !!!
The Problem is that when YOUR drive fails...all goes with it: Your e-mail addresses; favorites and history; all the Family pictures that are now gone forever; your business and financial information - In other words...your whole computer life...Now isn't that something to look forward to - Try calling India to Fix That Disaster.
I just spoke to an Audio-mixer Specialist who uses TONS of hard drives and he said he was having the same failure rates with Maxtor!!!
NOW What?
The Problem I called one of my largest Distributors of Hard-drives and he told me They were having a '0' return rate for SAMSUNG Hard-drives and liked that a lot as did their customers. So, I am now ordering Samsung for my main drives and IBM for my back-ups. I am in the same boat you are and can only try another brand, hope for the best, and Back-up my system regularly.
It will take 1-2 years to see how the Samsungs work out but I will have back-up after back-up after back-up as can you imagine what would happen to my business if five years of work all of a sudden went up in smoke!
DO NOT for any reason call me for ANY information on hard drives as NOW you know as much as I do and you will hear very bad words from meand I will hang up. This is simply an informational page to possibly help others out there in the same situation I am.
And Just to be Blunt:
As a 45-year technician and Computer Store owner...I would rather eat Pig-shit than buy another Maxtor Drive.
