Welcome to the Web Site of Maine HEMP!  We expect most of you to be very surprised at the many profitable uses of the hemp plant and its relevance as a sustainable replacement for wood fiber in high quality, paper making. Once you are finished, you might even believe that it is too valuable to smoke.

Our mission is to explore these allegations and provide factual information to Maine businesses interested in profitably growing, processing, and manufacturing hemp products. To realize this economic potential we must first isolate the 'indica' species from the once prohibited 'sativa' species with its abuse potential based on a high THC content. Then we must be able to convince the skeptical public that it is possible to separate the two, reducing the risk to hemp growers from legal destruction of their commercial crops.

Only then will we be able to realize the great side benefits as a more environmentally friendly alternative to the wood based paper industry. If the national governments of Australia, Canada, South Africa and other countries can back hemp based agriculture; and companies with the standing of Mercedes Benz can explore long lasting hemp products in their automobiles, then Mainers can also take a long hard look at the benefits of this product for declining economies in many Maine communities. Obviously, we need a lot of research before one can even lend some degree of credibility to claims that the the opening statement. We need field trials, crop yeild studies, identification of cost components, hemp pulping plant designs, etc.
