The Student Council at B.R.H.S. seems to grow every year as students
become aware of the possibilities a large group has. Throughout the
years students have pushed for various rights they felt they needed.
Thanks to former presidents, the Student Body President
now holds a non-voting position on the School Board. This provides a voice
for the students and often educates them on what
is happening behind the scenes.
The Student Council is made up of three representatives from each class in
addition to the president whom is elected by the student body. In the
beginning of the year a
Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer are elected from the
representatives. Meetings are always open to all students and faculty and
are conducted in a relaxed democratic fashion.
In the 1998-99 school year the Student Council has completed a number of
projects. We started out the year by planning Homecoming events including
numerous class competitions and ending with a dance. This was the
council's first indication the school spirit is at a high this year. For
this reason the council continued to plan events which encouraged fun
and spirit.
This year the Student Council took it upon themselves to get the high
school more involved with the Human Food Chain. Memo's were sent out to
all teachers encouraging student and faculty participation. The Food
Chain was a success as it stretched from the Elementary School to the
Congregational Church. The council helped create an after school learning
center in which high school students along with faculty members help work
with students from fourth to seventh grade on school work and projects.
The Winter Carnival was brought back to BRHS. Although we were not
blessed with snow for this event, the school wide competition was a
success. Spirit days, relay races, and a finale which consisted of a huge
tug-o-war game rounded out the week. That night a dance was held at the
Teen Center with a D.J. and a band.
In early January the council began to talk about doing something for the
community. What resulted was a food drive at the last
varsity basketball game of the season. People were admitted in for cans
and boxes of food. In early March, we helped sponsor
a blood drive. Most of the members donated time and blood and many
students at BRHS were allowed to leave the school to
donate.
The second annual Talent Show took place at BRHS in which students and
faculty members were surprised by the numerous talent shown by many high
school students. The council also created a scholarship for graduating
seniors. The main theme of the scholarship was to select two well
balanced students having a at least an eighty average, but more
importantly participating in community service and school activities were
the most important aspects of the scholarship. A board of underclassmen
and faculty members made the final selections after the perspective
winners filled out an application.
The 1998-99 Student Council is pleased to have been able to work closely
with administration and teachers to make decisions which effect the
school. It was our goal to travel one step further to arriving at the day
when the student body and the faculty are equal in power and decision
making ability. The Student Council is pleased with their accomplishments
and are happy with the spirit and enthusiasm that the students and faculty
showed at all council sponsored events. THANK YOU BRHS.
