This is a wonderful trip, very much understated in the guidebook. The views are great. The trail up the ledge is extremely steep and quite exposed. I wouldn't recommend it for kids unless I was very confident in their athletic abilities, balance and coordination. You might also have trouble if heights bother you, especially on the descent. The trail is fairly well marked with red blazes and a few cairns. The bushwhack to the main summit is short and fairly steep, but easily done and well worth the effort for the views. I was able to follow a faint trail down from the peak, but I didn't see it on the ascent, probably because of all the leaves.

Finding the trail head is quite easy, although the guidebook could use an up-date. The cement bridge has been replaced by a modern highway bridge. There is no longer any evidence of the former store, but Mountain View Road is clearly marked. There is also no evidence of the former railroad station. The parking area is marked by a couple of crude handmade signs. As you face the tracks, the trail starts about 100 feet to the left as an ATV trail. It quickly splits to the right off of the ATV trail. I saw no evidence of the picnic area or the abandoned ells that the guidebook speaks of. There is no water on this trail.
