Claudette Deschennes and I started up Saddleback at around 8 PM. We moved at a pretty good rate. I kept having flashbacks of the ATC '97 conference hike I had done. We stopped and filled water bottles and continued on. We reached the top just as the sun was disappearing completely and the full moon was coming up. It was quite windy on top with the wind coming from the north west. We found a sheltered spot behind a rock and had a snack. As we were getting ready to head to the Horn we saw a flash off to the north west. Then another flash. We both saw the flash and looked at each other and agreed we should get down. We both thought it was lightning. I was later told it was fire works obscured by clouds. We continued towards the Horn to be about halfway down. We had not brought a tent as we had intended to bivouac. We got off the trail a ways and snuggled in under some low trees. Fully expecting to get rained on as the wind was still blowing and we could still see the "lightning" in that general direction. We laid there and watched the full moon climb slowly casting shadows as it went. We slept for a short time then it was morning. I got some photos of the sun rise. We ate a cold breakfast and hit the trail down back to the cars.
