Peter Roderick led a group from the ME AMC Chapter's Annual Meeting on a hike to this wonderful area. While one person rode a bike along the quiet roads of this down east location, 12 hiked the 9.8 mile loop hike. Trails were well marked with very legible signs at junctions and a couple of overlooks. Almost half the loop is along the coast with a stretches going along cobble beaches and over rock headlands. The inland trail crosses woods, meadows, and a few swamps. Terrain is rolling with elevations ranging between zero and approximately 200'. Trails were well constructed with bog bridges in wet locations and rock steps ascending and descending steep slopes. Average speed was 2 MPH, slower along the coast because of pauses to look at the fantastic scenery and have lunch, and faster on the inland trails which were nearly level and free of obstacles. Among wild life species encountered were a seal, cormorants, gulls, loons, and a few mosquitoes. Weather was sunny and warm for October. This is a great trip. The only down side is the remoteness of the location some 2 hours east of Ellsworth. That could be mitigated by using one of the 3 first come-first served camp sites along the shore, one of which has a privy with scenic(?) views looking in and out.

Thanks Peter for a great trip. Jim Linnane
