We started at Pinkham Notch visitors center and took the lost pond trail to the base of the Wildcat Ridge Trail. The Lost Pond Trail is about a mile over flat, but rough terrain. We ascended Wildcat Ridge to the first major peak at Wildcat E. This trail was very steep and I really wouldn't recommend coming down this way if it is at all wet. Wildcat E (and the rest of the wildcats for that matter) does not have a summit marker. If you look closely at the rock summit, you can see where a marker was placed previously but has since been removed. We continued on to Wildcat D, just beyond the chair lifts and summit lodge. Although the gondola lift was running, we didn't see any people at the top and the lodge was closed for the summer. Wildcat D is not marked per se, but there is an observation tower at the top. Continuing on for some distance, we encountered several unmarked peaks (including C & B I guess) before we finally made it to Wildcat A. Again, this wasn't really marked, but there is a sign for a "vista" close to the summit. We continued down to the Carter Notch Hut. This area should not be missed. There are a couple of incredible ponds near the hut which reflect the surrounding peaks of Wildcat and Carter Dome. We rested at the hut for a while and were quite happy that the hut keepers shared some of their Swedish fish with us. Although we had originally planned to continue up Carter Dome, our legs were pretty much dead by this point and the clouds had encapsulated the peak, so we just went down via 19-mile brook trail. This is one of the most beautiful trails I have seen in the whites. It is very easy and gradual, but encounters the convergence of several streams as it descends. At the bottom, we hitched back to Pinkham Notch. Total round trip time including breaks was about 7.5 hours.
