Outings and Workshops for 2006 Annual Meeting
Saturday, Sept. 30
Navigation Workshop
This workshop will be a combination of indoor and outdoor
exercises and will focus on maps and guide books and practical field
use of a compass. We will also focus on GPS and how it can be used as
an aid in navigation. Without a thorough understanding of maps and
compass a GPS alone will only get you lost. Bring your AMC maps and
guide books and your compass. The best compass for this workshop is one
with a clear rectangular base. Starts at 10AM. Leader: Bryan Courtois 282-3977
or Courtois@gwi.net

Bike Ride to Pemaquid
Point
Join me for a little
bit of local history! This ride will take us from Damariscotta to
Pemaquid Point. Visit the local countryside, ocean, lighthouse, fort,
and colonial settlement all within 40 miles! There is also a local art
museum to visit and a fishermen's museum. We will leave Camp Kieve at
9:30 and drive to Damariscotta and begin our ride from the municipal
parking lot on Route 1 behind the local stores on the water front. For
those who may be meeting us at the parking lot, the ride will begin at
10 am. Leader: Denise Courtemanche 725-6285 decacct@rcn.com
Mushrooms of Maine
Mushrooms are among the most mysterious of
life forms. They can be all the colors of the rainbow- red, orange,
yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Without them we'd have no forests
(Polyporaceae), penicillin, beer, bread, wine - you get the picture! In
this workshop during peak season we'll put the FUN into FUNGI by
identifying specimens you and I may bring, SPORE PRINTING as ID method,
go on a walk and find more, and watch a 1-hour DVD presentation.
Contrary to popular belief, less than 1% of mushrooms are dangerously
poisonous, and I'll discuss the 5 or so that can kill you in Maine as
well as a list of 50 or so edibles. BRING if you have it: AUDUBON (or
other field guide), hand lens, and a basket. Session begins at 1 PM.
Limit is 14 participants. Leader: Ted Elliot 621-4931 pegtedel@webtv.net
Paddling in Damariscotta Lake
We will go out and about. Bring your own canoes
and kayaks or use the camp's canoes. Bring a lunch. Probably swimming.
Probably a late afternoon or evening paddle as well. Trip leaders: Carolyn
Welch 725-8178 cwelch5432@verizon.net
and Dave Lanman 622-2403 davidL2@msn.com
Galactic Tour
Sky conditions permitting, Ted Elliot will share
his knowledge of astronomy and take us on a tour of the skies. No need
to pre-register; workshop will begin after John NeffÕs presentation
Saturday evening and take place near the meeting facility.
Sunday, Oct. 1
Fall Digital Photography
Walkabout Paddling in Damariscotta Lake
This is an
opportunity to take a leisurely morning fall hike and then spend the
early afternoon comparing photographs and improving digital camera
skills. We will start from a location near the Camp Kieve, Nobleboro,
Maine on the last day of the AMC Fall Gathering and hike and take
pictures through a varied landscape. Later weÕll return to the camp to
review pictures using a computer and an LCD projector--sharing tips and
tricks. The hike will be 2-4 miles at a slow pace. The walkabout is
geared for people who are getting acquainted with their digital camera.
However more experienced photographers are welcome to participate and
share their expertise. Limited to 10 participants. Leader: Jeanne
Christie 892-1008 jeanne.christie@aswm.org

Probably an early morning mist paddle. And maybe
something tidal after breakfast. We'll talk about it in the lodge...or call us
if you know of some nifty places to consider. Trip leaders: Carolyn
Welch 725-8178 cwelch5432@verizon.net
and Dave Lanman 622-2403 davidL2@msn.com
Nature Hike to Dodge
Point Pemaquid River Paddle
This easy to moderate
4 mile hike will wander through a forest that has a rich variety of
plant and animal life to the tidal waters of the Damariscotta passing
remnants of human history such as an old mill site. We will meet at
Camp Kieve and car pool to the trailhead. Leader: Peg Nation (207)

We will travel to Bristol after breakfast on Sunday
and launch canoes on the Pemaqid River next to a canoe rental shop (parking
available just north of the shop). This is a pleasant flat-water paddle through
a marsh area to Biscay Pond and back. A round trip of approximately 4 miles.
