Welcome to a concise Archives-related Web site, with intriguing links,

ARCHIVES
Here are links for you to visit some large national collections and smaller,
yet equally interesting and well-presented, regional and specialized
archives:
- Public Record Office, U.K.
The Public Record Office is the repository of the national archives for
England, Wales, and the United Kingdom.

Preservation Services site, with additional information on parchment
and photographs, is available here.
- National Archives and
Records Administration, U.S.A.
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) "is an independent
federal agency that preserves our nation's history and defines us as a people
by overseeing the management of all federal records." Click here for their
Preservation link.
- National Archives of Canada
The National Archives of Canada preserves Canada's archival heritage, and
makes it available through a wide variety of means- publications, exhibitions,
special events, as well as reference and research services.
- National Archives
of France
The site for the Centre d'acceuil et de recherche des Archives nationales,
in Paris (pictured at right), includes links to other regional French
archives and to ARCHIM,
an archival image database.
- The Newberry Library
Located at 60 West Walton Street, Chicago, the Newberry is an independent
research library concentrating in the humanities with an active educational
and cultural presence in Chicago. Privately funded, but free and
open to the public, it houses an extensive non-circulating collection of
rare books, maps, and manuscripts. As well, there is an informative
conservation link
within their site.
- Provincial
Archives of New Brunswick
Pictured below. Available information resources begin with the archival
documents of New Brunswick, which include visual records. From their home
page, you may link to various Canadian archival sites, including material
on Acadian folklore and history.
CONSERVATION
With these Web links, you can connect to some of the most informative and
versatile archival conservation internet resources:
- Conservation OnLine ("CoOL")
CoOL, a project of the Preservation Department of Stanford University
Libraries, is a full text library of conservation information,
covering a wide spectrum of topics of interest to those involved with the
conservation of library, archives, and museum materials. A thorough list
of conservation topics includes reprographics, and the selection of links
to professional organizations includes the
American Institute for Conservation
(AIC).
- Basic Book Repair Methods
A photographically-illustrated textbook, instructing readers in the basic conservation of books. I wrote the text, basing the material on my workshop-teaching lesson plans, and created and printed all the photographs, making this a user-friendly textbook for library and archive preservation units, along with self-learners. Published by Libraries Unlimited,1999.
- The Guild of Book Workersis the national non-profit organization for all the book arts. It was founded in 1906 and since that time, especially the last 15 years, has grown immensely in scope. The Guild currently has over 900 members worldwide. Areas of interest include bookbinding, printing, conservation, marbling, calligraphy, and papermaking.
- The Northeast Document Conservation
Center
NEDCC's mission is to improve the preservation programs of libraries,
archives, museums, and other historical and cultural organizations; to
provide the highest quality services to institutions that cannot afford
in-house conservation facilities or that require specialized expertise; and to
provide leadership to the preservation field. Their
services,link includes
paper, book, and photographic conservation, as well as information on
disaster assistance. NEDCC also offers workshops in these areas.
- European Preservation
Information Center (EPIC)
Based in Holland, this is the site of the European Commission on Preservation
and Access. Preservation management is the focus, particularly concerning
paper-based, sound and film, photographic, and digital archives.

- Bowdoin
College Archives
The archives collection documents the administration, people, and programs
at Bowdoin College over its more than 200 year history. The Archives'
Image Gallery
is the continuing result of my work there in 1996.
- The Center for Maine
History
The Library constitutes the world's premier collection of printed materials
on Maine history. The Center is located in downtown Portland, and includes
the Henry Wadsworth-Longfellow House.
- Acadian
Archives, University of Maine at Fort Kent
The Acadian Archives / Archives acadiennes opened its doors in 1991 to
assist the people of the Saint John River Valley of northern Maine to
document, preserve, and celebrate their history, culture, and way of life.
- University of Southern Maine Archives
The University Archives serves as the institutional memory of the University
by preserving a variety of materials and records, dating from its origin
as the Western State Normal School in 1878. Records of correspondence,
speeches, project files, as well as artifacts document the history and
development of the University of Southern Maine. The Archives is located
at the Portland Campus Library at USM, the
Albert Brenner Glickman Family Library.
- Osher Map Library,
University of Southern Maine
The Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education is the
only separately established rare map library in northern New England. The
Smith and Osher collections comprise fine examples of original maps, atlases,
geographies, and globes spanning the years from 1475 to the present.
- Portland Museum of Art
The Portland Museum of Art, northern New England's premier fine arts
institute, features a collection of fine and decorative arts dating from the
18th century to the present. The Museum's collection includes works by
Renoir, Degas, Monet, Picasso, and Maine artists such as Winslow Homer,
Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, John Marin, Maurice Prendergast, and Andrew
Wyeth.
