J.Hathaways' Restaurant & Tavern is located in Harpswell Center just nine miles from Bowdoin College in Brunswick. The restaurant is in the barn portion of the house which was built sometime between 1826 and 1850 (depending on the source). Inside, the walls are covered in old barnboard, most, cleaned and recycled from the barn itself. A large fireplace with a wood stove is located on the north wall, while the southern exposure is done with bay windows. Seating is comfortable with plenty of room between tables because we feel this gives the diner a chance for more intimate conversation and room to stretch.

The Tavern is a separate room. It is open only when the dining room is open and is the spot many single people choose to eat and is also used as a waiting area when the restaurant is busy. The restaurant is open for dinner only starting at 5 pm. J. Hathaways' has been open since April of 1985 and is run by Jeff & Jean Hathaway who live on the premises with their three children Eric, Mark and Ian. The bill of fareis simple but varied with an array of dishes including fresh fish, chicken dishes, pork, steaks and vegetarian items as well as sandwiches. The menu does change somewhat according to the season and specials are usually based on fresh ingedients available on that day. A full selection of liquor, beer and wines is available.Dining Room

Many of the wines are served by the glass as well as by the bottle. One of the favorite menu items is the famous English style fish and chips brought to J. Hathaways' by way of Jeff's grandfather's recipe from Ye Olde English Fish & Chips in Woonsocket, R.I. where Ben Stead ran his shop in the 40's and 50's before retiring. All soups and desserts are made by the owners on the premises. Reservations are always accepted.
